ok, well, should the stock intel cpu fan on a 3.0ghz prescott pentium 4 be sucking air from the processor or blowing air on it to cool it?
It should be blowing air onto it to cool down the heatsink! that makes the most sense! if you turn it around youll prob get a drop in temps of about 2-6 degrees. i had that same problem with my old celeron 1.8.
Yes, the fan should blow air over the heatsink. While you have the heatsink off consider putting some Arctic Silver 5 on it (assuming you haven't already). It should lower temps considerably over the stock thermal pad. Just make sure you DO IT RIGHT! Read the instructions on the Arctic Siver website to make sure you do.
ok, well my cpu fan is blowing onto it, i just decided to ask this becouse my dad said that it should be sucking air from it, as a while back we had someone around to try to fix the computer, he was wondering what was going on, he said the fan's in the psu and on the cpu were blowing the wrong way, he said they should of bieng sucking air from it, but it makes sense he was wrong, i had to turn the computer on for him, he even had problems exiting programs from task manager. When i got this cooler for my ATI radeon 9600 (cooler did not fit) it had some arctic cooling silicone paste, is it ok to use that with the cpu?
yeah, basically thermal paste is thermal paste, you can use it on any HSF but i recommend Artic Silver 5 or any other paste with silver or copper in it!
errm, it says it includes metal oxide :\. also if i use a pentium 4 3.0ghz stock cooler on a 2.8ghz celeron d, will it cool the celeron d more?, becouse i want to see if it will stop shutting down problems.
Metal Oxide will do FOR NOW, i would imagine that would cool it better bacause the stock HSF for the pentium is designed to dissipate more heat!
and if that dont cool good, i am thinking of tie wraping 4 fans together then tie wrapping them onto the stock cpufan/heatsink, do you think that will cool it down more? (5fans cooling cpu)
i dont know how effective that would be or how strong but i imagine it would do a good job temporarily! why dont you just buy a new HSF?

yes, i tried it, but it was not making much difference in temperature, infact the temperature was getting higher with more fans on :s
i have the same question about the heatsink direction, but for amd venice 3000+ chip? is the answer still, that the heatsink fan should be blowing down on the heatsink + chip? also another thing to take into consideration is im gettin the heavily reccomended dual fan tehrmaltake 420w psu, and it also has a fan blowing down on the cpu... should this affect anything? thanks.
it shouldent affect it, i would of thought the fan blowing down on the cpu from the psu would be sucking in, and there would be another fan on the psu sucking out, the cpu question about fan blowing at the cpu is right. i have orderd a ac freezer 4, wich should give me good cooling. could my shutting down problem be releated to the high temperatures the cpu is experiencing?, the thing is i read on a website, p4 processors cannot overheat, becouse they throttle, and there max temp is like 85 degrees, but my processor never gets to that temperature so how can temperatures of 62-64-65-68-74-77 degrees in games shut my computer down?.
