    Hey,

For a short summary, you might want to skip to the last question.

So I got a new CRT just about 2 or 3 weeks ago, a Viewsonic E90. Its a low end 19" monitor, .27 dot pitch, it says its optimal viewing is 1280x1024 at 80hz, and it boasts that this configuration will provide hours of comfortable working. With this configuration I can't read for more than 15 minutes without straining my eyes very hard. Please note I have all proper drivers loaded. I have absolutely 20/20 vision, before this I used a 12.1 inch lcd for the same ammounts of time as this new CRT with no problems ever (for years now).

I've since changed the contrast and brightness to about 50% (which seems ridiculous for any monitor), changed the colour temperature to 65k and changed the resolution to 1152x864@95hz. I also made sure to eliminate any glare. Even this reasonably strains my eyes and I can still faintly see the screen blink on white backgrounds.

My eyes are absolutely killing me! Shouldn't I be able to view 1280x1024 at 80hz (the *manufacturer's reccomended optimal configuration*) or 1280x960 at 85hz comfortably?

What configurations (please include rough brightness/contrast settings) can you folks view comfortably?

The .27 dot pitch is what's killing you; that's a pretty awful DPI to be honest. Compare that to a Samsung 955DF with a .20 DPI, you'll notice a huge difference. I'm sitting in front of a Viewsonic (Optiquest) Q95 with a .21 dot pitch, and I still wish it was a little better. :( But for the record, I am running it pretty comfortably at 1280x1024 ~75Hz.

Well try it at 75hz or 70 hz most of the time at higher resoulutions (on crt) the image is clearer at lower refresh rates.

I'm really hoping its just a misconfiguration, do you guys think I would have an argument to exchange it? I'll try it at 70hz for a bit.

    I quote

I didn't even put that in capitals! Thats how they have it on their site!

Ummm, like AT said, its the dot pitch. You kinda got a bad monitor. Sorry but no, there is nothing you can do. Nothing at all. What is done is done. Muahahahaha.

i think its the refresh rate, i simply cant view any screen on 75hz otherwise i see the screen flicker like when you watch tv with monitors in the background, the screen jumps, but thats just me!

yeah I can see tears in the frames with my refresh rate is 60hz. From far away, around 20feet, I can see 75hz flicker.

I've used a .26 dot pitch monitor and It's fine. Though it's only 17" at 1024x768, I don't have any eye strain from it after playing hours of games. Maybe I've got superman's eyes...
