I don't know about how awesome the 7800 is. It outperforms the other cards in the various benchmarks, but not by so many FPS that you have to drop your 6800 and run to buy a 7800, GT, GTX or otherwise. Also, is it just me or does SLI only provide a small boost in fps? In FEAR one 7800 wielded 88 fps, and two in SLI mode came in at 91 fps. 3fps doesnt sound worth 450 bucks. Just wait another five or six months, and history will repeat itself, Nvidia will probably put out some 8xxx series probably to compete with the next gen consoles. (supposedly ps3 will have a gpu better than 2 7800s in sli) So wait, and buy a 7800 when they're crazy cheaper, especially if you're on a college budget like me
While it may be pretty sweet, I'm not sure how many people are going to be able to afford a card that is asking $450. I hope nVidia comes up with a sub-$200 7x00 card if they're interested in sales. When it comes to video cards $450 is not budget, much less mid-range/mainstream.
You've got that right, i shelled out 300 for a 6800GT and i dont think i'll be upgrading well until after i graduate college (may 06 hopefully) 450 is steep. Nvidia better start making these cards cheaper if they hope to keep the mainstream market. Forget about enthusiasts, 600USD for a 6800 with 512 ram??? The person who can afford that has some deep pockets.
i dont think the 7800gt is that impressive, :0 only 10,000 in 3d mark 05, lol my 9600 scores close to 2,000, so think about it, £200 for x800xl, overclock it/mod it into x800xt (better than 6800 ultra apparently) your going to get your self about 7,000. and i belive it was 10,000 with a 7800gtx ultra, seen benchmmarks of it on some site.
Actually the RSX graphics component in the PS3 is very closely related to the G70 with a few optimizations.
7800 is definitely a powerhouse performer, but not worth a 450 dollar upgrade from a 6800gt. I guess my gripe is with incentive to upgrade. Had i never gotten a 6800gt i would have definitely gotten a 7800; granted, thats if money wasn't an issue. However, money was an issue and i purchased the 6800gt. lol maybe i'm just convincing myself so that i don't spend more money on computer upgrades, especially with the semester around the corner. Then again, i could possibly sell my 6800gt and shell out another 100 to 150 and..........argh no i must stick to my purchase lol.
wouldent 2 x800xt's or 2 6800gt's beat 1 7800gtx? the 7800gt is extramly cheap now, if i had a pci express board i would get one, £203 for x800xl, and then an extra £70 and i could get a 7800gt
True, but nVidia has the 7x00 series as the successor to the 6x00 series...it's just rather odd that they only have the flagship product available and no mention of a mainstream one. ATi has a full lineup with their next set of Radeon's.
I'm planning on getting the GT, it's 400 on Newegg and will be more than I need, I'll just get a 3000+ and OC and the thing will still probably bottle neck so why bother with the GTX. I'm confindent that RivaTuner will do great things for me as well. I've read on other sites the 7800GT is a scaled down version of the GTX which makes sence and therefore is likely softmodable. SLI can make a pretty big dent, in some games you'll get speed about 80+% higher than a single card, but I imagine FEAR just doesn't utilize SLI's power, just like FarCry, no advantage in those games. For right now who cares? It's fast enough to max any game untill Unreal 3 comes out.
Hell, my 6600GT and my Winchester 3000+ allow me to do 1280x1024 with eye candy turned on in Far Cry and Doom 3. Now, Chronicals of Riddick tends to make it choke sometimes, but that's a pretty demanding game.
my 9600 can can play farcry on highest settings and reseloution, i tryed to put it to highest ot make it go slower to my dad would get annoyed and buy the x800xl before i made the money for it, but it would not get slow enought for my dad ot get annoyed with farcry, and it was still playable. doom 3 lags though.
, yes i did that, he went mental, and stormed down the stairs saying, i payed all this ****** money and no ****** works on this sorry bout the blanked out bits, its just thats exatly how my dad said it.
My 6800's good but it doesn't wow me a ton, I can crank up Doom 3 to High @ 1024x768 but no AA or AF. FarCry ran pretty well but not maxxed, HL2 ran dissappointingly slow with things cranked up but then again I could easily blame all this on my lack of good ram and so so proc.
i hope my x800xl will be better than that, there must be somthing wrong with that card. as if a radoen 9600 can run half life 2 on nerly highest settings, and far cry on highest settings (with no AA OR AF), now that shows there is a problem, and i also have generic 2x512mb (overclocked to 453mhz @3.4ghz processor overclock)
That's why you're getting the good results, that's a pretty powerful processor and a gig of most any ram is plenty for those games.
Doubtful, you win out on shear muscle, 3.4Ghz compaired to 1.8, even if this is Intel vs. AMD 600Mhz is a big difference. But we'd better not fly OT like we usually do
