My 'puter was being incredibly annoying and flakey, give me a hundred error messages, taking forever to do simple tasks, and most annoyingly freezing 20 minutes after every start-up. So I bought a new power-supply (Thermaltake silent purepower 420wts), and 2x256Mb's or G.Skill ram to increase stability and improve resale value. But I also reinstalled windows as I have no doubt there was about 30 viruses and a boat-load of spyware and Trojans as well. I got my hardware and ripped out my old crappy PSU and screwed in my shiny new puppy. After making the cables super tidey, tying everything up and tucking stuff back, replugging in all my components and dusting them out I was quite pleased with my efforts and went to instal the ram. I had no idea ram was such a bugger to get in! (I got my mobo with cpu and ram pre-installed to check for stability). I pushed so hard I was worried I broke something. Eventually I figured out you had to push in each side really hard, one at a time, not apply even pressure like I read...weird. It just occured to me that I would have a gig of ram now, sweet. I boot up and expect to see DUAL CHANNEL 128-BIT on my Post screen but no, SINGLE CHANNEL 64-bit comes up, grrrr. I go to check to see if it recognizes all my ram but it comes up with 768MB for no apparent reason. Turn off, place dims in different slots, reboot. Same thing. Reboot, move dimms around, same thing. I do it again and it comes up with 512MB's now! With 3 dimms installed! So I check the manual (it tells me I've got a memory error of sorts at post). It tells me the system won't boot with 3 dimms installed...okay, well it booted fine with all three dimms but I guess that's my problem. So last night I ordered another 256Mb's from Newegg, got some nice Patriot Extreme Performance 2-3-2-5 T1 stuff for a bit over $30. Hopefully I should be back in business by then.
let us know how it goes Exfoliate. Just a question Patriot Extreme Performance 2-3-2-5 T1 sounds pretty cheap, its £150 for 1GB here, whats the price like in the USA?
Alright, got my Patriot 256Mb's today (man that was quick, I didn't even ask for 2 day or rush processing). I popped it in and was pleased to see it registered as Dual-channel but it came up as a gig So I've got 512Mb's of cheapo vdata, 2x256Mb's of G.Skill, and 256Mb's of the Patriot Extreme. So why am I not showing up as 1.25gigs? I have no clue but I hope some of you do. I know all the dimms work as I'm getting no errors and the registered at one point. All I can think is by mixing sizes windows is getting confused?
