how far do you think i can push a P4 2.0Ghz with a CoolerMaster Ultra 6 CPU cooler with a idle temp. of about 41 degrees C. i don't want to mess with voltages
If it's a Wilamette core, I doubt you'll hit 2.2GHz even with voltage bumps, as the Wilamette core didn't see past 2GHz. With a Northwood core, you could look at upto 3GHz with some modest voltage bumps. If you don't know what core you have, you can download [google]CPU-z[/google] and it'll tell you what core you have. I know you're nervous about voltage, but as long as you stay below 1.65V, you'll be fine. However, it's always best to start with the stock voltage, and see where that gets you. I'd also recommend running [google]Prime 95[/google] for 24 hours to make sure no errors are popping up.
yeah also make sure your temps dont go too high, i only overclocked my CPU because its running Idle at 20*C whilst overclocked from 2.6-3.14GHz...but make sure you dont screw your memory up, i know on my bios my memory speed is directly affected by my FSB and i cant change the ratio so dont bump your CPU up too high or your memory may have problems.
Agree with B, a Northwood core will be able to be pushed to 2.4GHz or more if you increase voltage, however overclocking and increasing voltage will increase heat so monitor them carefully.
yeah, 41*C for an idle not overclocked is a bit warm...well maybe not to others but by my standards thats the maximum temp i would allow my CPU to go to because then it would mean my cooling wasnt sufficient, but it should be alright. Break a can of compressed air out, get some AS5 and make sure your cables are tidy and you should be able to lower temps by a fair few degrees.
lol, holy cheeze! i've just noticed im running 41C idle but i think i set up the fan wrong.....its not blowing air into the heatsink, i put it the prong way and its blowing out air....will this matter alot?
That'll make a huge dent in overclocking abilities! Turn that baby around and you'll probably notice IDLE temps will hover around 35!
hey does SP2 installation strain a cpu? im installing it now and im getting reading of between 46C and 50C and i've turned the fan allready.....
sounds like a faulty motherboard, 50 degrees for your 2.0ghz pentium 4 is not right, 49 degrees for my pentium 4 prescott 3.0ghz at idle is too hot!, and i put mine down to faulty motherboard as i have an arctic freezer 4 on my cpu
turning that fan around will do a lot of good, the air that is blown will be directly removing heat rather than the fan trying to suck air onto the heatsink, turn it around and see what happens, i think you're temps will drop considerably. Also do you have some Arctic Silver 5 on your heatsink/cpu? if you dont may i suggest you put some on, if you have other thermal compound i'm sure its fine but if you have a god awful thermal pad then use AS5 instead. 3 Tips to quickly decreas temps. *Clean case of dust - Use a can of compressed air and blow the dust outta your case. *Tidy Cables - Make sure you put cables where they wont interrupt air flow. *Use AS5 - Put this on your CPU under your heatsink rather than a thermal pad, it works wonders.
