I really like Western Digital. I've put mine through a lot of use and torture. I recently have bought two Seagate drives and they are about equal in tests and benchmarks compared to my Western Digital. Seagate comes with a 5 year warranty.

I'd go for the Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm drives (7200.2 models i think). They also support SMART.

I've had a Seagate Drive, (its SATA not IDE though) but from what I've read and heard Seagate and Western Digita make possibly the best drives, either one should be good, just try and avoid Maxtor though, sometimes their bearings wear out quickly

Western Digital, Samsung, Seagate, Fujitsu, IBM.

All should be good solid drives.

If you want quality and reliability go for Western Digital or Seagate no arguments.

Maxtor/IBM/Hitachi/Fujitsu - all known in the past as being majorly unreliable.

They are cleaning up their act and providing good drives alot of them.. but stick to Western Digital or Seagate - you won't go wrong.

Samsung are ok, but Western Digital and Seagate are the same price if not cheaper and you've got the reputation and known quality with what your buying.

Between Western Digital and Seagate - I would choose Western Digital.

Especially since your talking about IDE drives and not SATA drives..

With IDE Drives you HAVE TO go for WD or Seagate, as they were and are the best really..

I like WD a lot, since they can take a lot of punishment and keep on working. I prefer Seagate slightly, since they are typically faster and cooler running. Also, because they have some special patented liquid bearings, the drives are expected to be long-lasting. Therefore, Seagate drives are warrantied a full 2 years longer than any of their competition.

While Hitatchi's probably alright, they took over IBM's hard drive sector after IBM's notorious 75GXP and 60GXP hard drive fiasco's. Now, I've got some Maxtors that have been pumping along smoothly for several years, but I have noticed an increase in problems with that company's drives. I've really not seen problems from Western Digital or Seagate.

Samsung is probably pretty good too, but I simply haven't paid attention to their hard drives so I can't comment on them.
