Could anyone please give me some general information on setting up a wireless internet connection? At the moment all I have is a laptop with built-in wireless capability. What else will I need and how do I set it all up? Is there any particular internet service provider that I should use? Could anyone recommend routers etc? Can anyone give me a simple guide on how it works? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
if you have service pack 2 installed, there is an option in control panel to create a wireless connection in classic view. and do you have the the stuff to make a wireless connection e.g. wireless router
Yeah it's not just a case of connecting wirelessly, for that you need a DATA Card from the likes of O2 and Vodafone (in UK, not sure about USA) For a wireless network card you need a wireless router with a modem, either separately or as a single unit.
At the moment my desktop pc is connected to the internet through ntl broadband. What do I need to get now to set up a wireless connection for my new laptop. The laptop already has built-in wireless capability. Do I just need to get a router? Does the router connect to the modem that I already have?
Yeah what type of Modem is it? USB? Ethernet? Yeah you'll need a router providing your Modem is compatible, Ethernet Modems are required for most routers....(there may be some routers for USB ones, i'm not too sure though.
It is an ethernet modem. Does this just connect to the router and then the laptop will be able to receive the connection? Would you recommend any particular routers?
i'm not completely sure as i'm not the most knowledgeable on the subject, there may be some configuration to do but thats about all i know
You'll have to configure the router with the highest-level encryption it'll support, then configure the laptop to be able to authenticate per the preshared key(s) or certificate you set up on the router. The instruction manual will be helpful for the specific details. Linksys makes a good wireless router, as does Netgear.
