i have a dell laptop that came with 256Mb of ddr2 400 memory. i want to eventually have 2 Gb of ddr2 533 memory. now i am buying a 1 Gb stick aof ddr2 533 and if i also have the original 256 mb ddr2 400 stick in there all the memory will default to 400 mhz. Now the question. Which has better performance, 1.25 Gb of 400 mhz memory or just 1 Gb of 533 mhz memory? I have heard more is always better but I was wondering if i should take out the 256 mb stick.

You'll probably notice very little difference either way but I'd go with the 1.25GB. Unless you're overclocking DDR2 400 isn't going to hurn you. You can always just take out the 256MB and see how she runs without it at 533MHz.
