Ok so I need to build a gaming server, doesn't have to be top of the line, but this is what I had in mind, think it'll do for say a 20 person LAN? Athlon64 3400+ 1-2gb of DDR400 RAM Also sort of off topic, but do most games have dedicated server options? I know America's Army has, but what about Halo? Thanks in advance!
almost all games have dedicated server options. Only game I can think of that doesn't is...well...I can't really think of any. I wouldn't really put a 3400+ in a server, I'd put a 3000+ in personally. 2 gigs of ram would do nicely. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820227031 I'd say get two of those kits and it would make a very nice server.
Why would you want to put a 3000 in instead of a 3400? We won't be paying for any of this, it's just stuff thats lying around the shop. *EDIT* 100th post!
oh well, in that case then go for it. I'd say you'll be more than fine for 20 persons on any game. I wouldn't be surprised to see it handle way more than that.
How many games will it be serving at once, just one? Oh yeah, and grab a copy of CentOS for your OS. Serves games (and everything else) a lot better than Windows, and there's dedicated Linux server binaries for just about every multiplayer game in existance.
