hi guys i was wondering if anyone could help. I recently purchased a new USB hard drive and cant seem to get it to work. I'll attach images of what it says to me. If anyone can help I would really appreciate it. I was reading somewhere that it might be something to do with USB 2.0
First of all make sure Windows is totally patched & updated to its most current build. Next download and install the latest USB2 drivers/filters from your motherboard manufacturer.
my windows is updated fully. I'm not sure my motherboard even has usb 2.0, is there a way I can check? Also is this the problem? Will this hard drive not work with usb 1.1? thanks for your help
USB 2 is backwards compatible with USB 1.1, but it will be very slow (USB 1.1 is 40x slower than USB 2.0). In any case, it doesn't look like your USB drivers are properly loaded, be they USB 1.1, 1.2, 2.0... My original suggestion stands. Try and find the USB drivers from the website of your motherboard manufacturer.
Forgive me for being stupid but I cant find my original cd and I cant see any brand name on my motherboard. Is there anyway of finding out what I have though windows? or through the bios?
Hi m8 did you build the pc yourself? because if it a brand make like HP of Dell just look for your computer on their website and dwonload the driver from there failing this there a free trial toolkit you can download from www.driverguide.com that scans your computer for missing drivers and takes you to the correct part of their site to get these, i agree with the other post it does seem to be your usb port that is the problem, but do u use ne other usb devices other than the storage device that work? hope this helps + post back Dave
Yeah I built it myself but with surplus parts from other people so I'm not too sure what brand the motherboard is. Every other USB device I've put into this works perfectly so I really have no idea whats going on. All it tells me is that the device cannot start, is there a way of asking it why the device cant start that might help me a little! thanks for your help guys this really stuck me
ok i just tried that tool kit and it told me there are no updates or reinstalls needed Yes it does find the harddrive, but it then tells me it cannot start it.
Every electronic device built within the last 10 years should have an FCC ID on it. if you search for that ID number online, you should be able to find the manufacturer and a generic model perhaps. ...But, since you probably don't have USB 2.0 anyway and transfer speeds will be wretched through USB 1.1, why not just buy a USB2 PCI card? They are cheap, will have the drivers, and will give you much better bandwidth.
