Need to install new 80gb hard drive, can someone explain how to format and partition the drive, in a simple way? Have done it before, years ago, but forgot! Not even sure which one you do first.
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for that. However not got windows (yet) to run with, more like building new system so really think it better to use FDisk, don't you think?

Really for a Windows 2k/XP system, you need to use the NTFS file system, and fdisk won't format drives like that. If you're going to be installing windows on there anyway, the boot installer will have a tool for formatting/partitioning your drive before it starts installing.

    Thanka Addis,
Had windowsXP on old computer and whilst I have still got the O/S CD, I have never had a boot disk. Tried formmating drive with FDisk and used a Win 98 boot disk but can't get it to install the O/S. Can't get behond the A: prompt.

It is many years since I last tried such tasks, can you offer any other advice? Please

    I believe the command is:

    format x: /s

where x is the drive letter you want to format. After that reboot the machine and then type:

    x:\setup.exe

where x is the CD/DVD drive with the 98 disc in it.

Thats unusual, normally you'd only have to format and partition the HD before setup with Windows 95.
