Welcome to hardwareforums. Likely you have fallen victim to a bad infection of malware, an extremely common occurance for Windows users. For more info, check out our Security FAQ. We also have hundreds of threads on the issue, for instance here's a thread on spyware. The other major type of malware is virii... just try searching our forums for the term 'virus' and see how many hits you get. If you still have questions after all that, feel free to ask them here.

Well, you also have the bare minimum amount of RAM that Windows XP requires. Is your HDD activity indicator flashing constantly? If so, you're probably using more RAM than your system even has available. I recommend at least 512mb for XP to function properly. Also, are all your chipset, video, (etc...) drivers installed? Is DMA enabled on all of your drives, or PIO?

I would check to see what is eating up all of your system resources. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to open the task manager. Then click on the processes tab. From there, you can see all of the running processes on your computer.

I don't feel you have a RAM issue here. Your PC doesn't really need upgrading, and should run Windows XP fine without any lagging. I've run Windows XP on computers with as little as 128-192MB of RAM and only 500MHz clock speed, with no real performance issues.

I suppose it depends on what you use the PC for. If it's for occasional internet browsing, then your setup is more then adequate.

Actually, thats a really good point! Distruptions in your internet service can happen frequently, especially if your using NTL! :D

As for dial-up, well what do you expect?

I suspect that when your computer was being used before it had just enough RAM to work fine. After you had the Internet hooked up there was some service/application for a modem/ISP service that was running, for example on the computer that's on the net at my house (my computer is networked to that one) there was a Modem use indicator and BT software for diagnostics/connection setup. I think it's probably those services that have taken your RAM usage over what it was before and causing your PC to be laggy. But that's just my thoughts.
