Hi all - I am a newbie so please be patient with me!

    I have a problem...

I recently upgraded my sisters old pc with Windows 2000 OS (she previously had Windows ME on her PC). Anyway, to cut a long story short, during the installtion a problem occured and the pc will no longer boot up. I decided to remove her hard drive and place it in my pc as a slave with a view to copying her files on to my pc so I can back them up.

My pc recognised the new hard drive but all the folder names appear to be random - they have names such as _()|¬", */*-*/*. Does this mean my hard drive is broken and I cannot recover the files? Hopefully not!

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Much appreciated.

    Kev:(

Microsoft Windows includes a utility for checking hard drives.

Go into a command prompt (click start, run, type 'cmd' and press enter),

    Type chkdsk X: /f

X:= the hard drives letter, probably D:

The /f switch tells the program to find and fix any errors it finds.
