I've had some pretty hard luck here with my impressions on starwars games, first with KOTOR 1 which oddly didn't grab me, then the mindling Starwars Episode III game for PS2 which I stupidly paid fully price for. Now this. A good friend of mine loaned it out to me and he was totally into it so I had high expectations. It got very positive reviews, even the PC version like he loaned me.
I get it all installed and boot up and what happens? The load screen locks up, fine, it happens. Then when I actually get going I couldn't help but question my friend and pretty much all the reviews really. The weapons were really dull and packed very little punch. Everything that didn't have ammo, which is pretty much everything overheats in a snap and the enemy just spawns right before your eyes.
On top of that the game seemed to randomly lock up between levels and most of all I had extream graphical issues. The game isn't particularly great looking off the back with the sky textures unmoving and very dull and a full fledged wraparound texture making up some levels complete with a totally "bald spot" spot directly above you. That aside it ran great with it maxed but there were numerous texture problems. First things looked really washed out and the draw distance became horrid for some reason, even with it maxed. Then there were extream problem in space, all the planets and nebulas etc. appeared, then dissappeared only to come back as I changed angles. In the hangers I'd frequently get garbled video problems below the ships but moreover space was just downright frustrating. Maybe I'm just bad but the controls are unusable in piloting the spacecraft. I turned the sensitivity way up and I still could harly get around. It became extreamly disorienting and I got turned about very easily, making tracking fighers impossible.
I'll end my whining there but please tell me I've just got a screwed up computer/copy as I don't want to belive the game is there bad. I imagine the console versions control a lot better and don't have these issues as well. I was really looking foward to this game so I hope I just ran into some random bad luck with the whole game. And the only patch for it I could find was some massive 177Mb sever type thing that wouldn't ever be worth it on dial-up. Any insights here? Thanks.

My brother (7 year) has it on ps2, it had good reviews and a few people at school thought it was great. I haven't played it myself with work to do.

I've played it on PC, PS2, Xbox and PSP. I have to say that yes, the PC version does run into control issues and some graphical problems. Your best bet would be to get it for a console, it runs really well and it's a fantastic game. It's just a shame it didn't work so well on the PC.

Thanks all, I'm glad it's normally a good game. I might pick it up for PS2 once the price drops. I'll probably try reinstalling it but it's not the only game that's messed up on me so I just imagine my computer is screwed up as usual.

Shame that Battlefront II didn't grab you, Exfoliate. I was actually thinking of getting it for the PC, but I'm kind of resisting now. Games like that are always much more fun on the consoles anyway. Battlefront I was crazy on the XBox. Wilder, his friends, and myself would have crazy multi-planet battles for hours without it getting old. The only reason I would buy it for the PC is control (I'm a mouse guy) and multiplayer online play (my firewall here would block it). Therefore, seems to be no point in buying it. Shame really that they can't port a great game on the PC the same way they do on the consoles. Pure laziness, perhaps?

Well actually I was able to simply bypass that space battle with the click of a button so I never had to endure the utter crapiness of the control scheme. I'm a bit of a mouse guy myself but nothing about BF2 in space is mouseworthy in my opinion. So yeah now I'm on to new missions that are mildly entertaining. The one cool part is how you progress through some major points in Episode three and then become a bunch of strom troopers with Darth Vader as a playable character, that's pretty cool.
