I have a compaq laptop with a mobile p4 2.4 GHZ processor. However, under my system profile in windows, it says something along the lines of p4 [email protected]. Is my processor running slower than it can? If so, how do i change this and should i? TIA!

It may be that your mobile CPU is throttling the clock speed down when its idle to save power, when you need processing power yo will get the full 2.4GHz of it.

    I think Addis is right.

Another explaination might be down to a program called SpeedStep. This program slows down the CPU to help conserve battery power. You can turn off SpeedStep if you've plugged in an AC adaptor, and need some high performance.

Its suposed to be like that. It down clocks the processor to save battery. I worked for HP fixin laptops for a wile and if i remember correctly some of the laptops had a setting in the bios to turn off speedstep. But its better to keep it on, when u you need it the processor will kick back up.
