since i got my tft 17" monitor, on certain pages and stuff, like depending on the colour, sometimes on a really bright page, on the left side of the screen, is like slight flickering, and i see black faint lines flashing up.

does anyone have any idea what the problem could be?

    Try upping the refresh rate.

Actually, i'd try lowering the refresh rate as TFT screens don't rely on refresh rates as much as CRT's do. Basically, flicker is a thing of the past with TFT's. I get the same problem with my TFT, but it's very minor.

    what causes this flicker then?
my monitor only supports max of 1280 x 1024 @ 60hz which is pretty dissapointing

    1280 x 1024 is the standard resolution for 17 and 19 inch TFT's.
Flicker can be caused by many things which may include dirty power to the screen, minor power interruptions, video card issues and just general use basically. Seriously though, if it's not a serious flicker, i wouldn't worry about it.

there is nothing magnetic around monitor, i moved all speakers onto floor, this flicker, if i ever get it on the desktop, its becomes a pain in the ass, its so annoying.

i have noticed in some games, it lets me have the option to crank the res up to 1600 x 1200 i think, would my monitor actually work with that res?

1600x1200 resolutions in game menus are game dependent, meaning that not all games will allow you to select that high a resolution. It's extremely doubtful that your monitor will allow for that resolution.

Whats this about the power to the monitor? I have an Acer AL 1716 monitor and it all seems fine untill the screen is mainly black then I see a noticable flicker throughout the whole screen and in some games I actually see a refresh bar which makes no sense at all. Also if some one is using a vacuume or a hairdryer the screen goes completely nuts. Is there something I can do about it or is it just bad wiring in the house?

well resolution dictates refresh rate so try lowering the resolution and raising the refresh rate, not reallt even sure if that will help but is worth a try, 1152x864 and then if its possible change the refresh to 70 or 75
