I have always had a problem with my USB ports where almost anything I plug in will disconnect and then reconnect every 10-30 seconds. I noticed the problem got alot worse when I changed the CMOS battery in my motherboard (Asus P4B533-E) and I had to redo alot of the settings. I am running WinXP SP2. Does anyone know of an incorrect BIOS setting or Windows setting that could be the cause? Thanks in advance.

I would first check your BIOS for any settings related to USB that look out of place. Also, if you are using the front USB ports, make sure the USB cable isn't baring any wiring.

Thanks for the reply, I'm not using the front ports, just the ones that are part of the motherboard. The BIOS settings all look normal, USB legacy support is enabled and USB2.0 is enabled, and I don't see any other settings that look like they relate to USB.

The second thing you can try is to uninstall the USB Root Hub in Device Manager and restart the computre. From there, Windows will detect the USB ports and automatically install them.
