Right so my computer is less than a year old and it has two dvd drives on it - one is just a reader and the other is a re-writer.

Up until about 30mins ago my reader drive was reading DVD's fine and then suddenly it stopped working. i ejected the disc and put it back in again. the status light goes on and the disc appears to start spinning but then stops.

I went into My computer and other programs and it seems that the drive thinks that there is no disc in there. I have tried restarting my computer, changing the DVD's that I put in the drive, putting the same DVD's in the re-writable drive and they have worked, and put CD's in the reader drive and they have read fine.

I am left with the situation that it appears that my DVD rom reader drive will know not read DVD's but will read CD's.

Does anyone know what or why this could be happening.

    many Thanks

Things obviously do not change from one minute to the next for no reason.
    There are several options:
First, for the panicy jewish mums, the damn thing is broken.... possible......
Or some part of a needed software has become corrupted.

Personaly I would try the following in this oredr:
Re-install the drive through the device manager. If you are not sure post back.
Try and fix the ASPI layer.
You can try and install new firmware for your drive, if you can find it (the firmware obviously).
You can try the offending drive in a different computer and last.

I cannot think of any other trouble shooting strategy.

If you are not sure or need any further information just post back.

rite, lil update. I have followed the troubleshooter guide for the device and it is telling me that I may need to update my drivers.

Does anyone know where I can get a good one that isn't very expensive?

I have also noticed that when I go into My computer the drive called DVD DRIVE (D) when i click that, on the details tab it is saying DVD DRIVE (D) then CD drive below that???

Isn't it annoying when people completely ignore your post, and try to do things their own way :smash:

skribla, have you even tried sabashuali suggestions?
