memory problems

I recently fitted a new usb 2 card to my computer and it refused to boot. When i removed it i havent been able to start my computer. It makes a long beep and then three short beeps, which i have learned is a memory problem. i have since tried to clear the cmos and then fitted new memory. but im havent got any further than it keep repeating the series of beeps. Please any help would be recieved gratefully

 

1 long beep and 3 short beeps is normally a video card failure.

-check it is seated properly
-check the fan is spinning
-try another video card if possible

 

Hmmm - I think 1 long and 2 shorts is video and 1 long 3 shorts is RAM.

To test your RAM, download and install on to a formatted floppy MemTest86. Then, with the floppy in the drive, reboot the computer. The computer should boot to the floppy and start testing your RAM. Let it run for several passes or even overnight. You should have no reported errors. If your computer does not boot to the floppy, you may have to change the boot sequence in the BIOS setup menu.

I know from experience that this is not always the case. I was working on a computer with a poorly seated AGP card, and the computer was emitting 1 long + 3 short! RAM failure is normally emits constant long beeps.

So what was the problem then? Video card, memory or neither?

 

The problem was the video card. when i put it back i cleaned the socket and wiped the contacts and it seemed to do the trick. Thanks very much for your advice, im very grateful
