Hello, everyone. I'm planning on installing a second internal drive to my PC. I note that the IDE cable that hooks up my present drive is also a connection for my CD ROM drive. I'm completely new to HD installation, so please bear with me if the following seems nonsensical: I'm thinking that if I install the second drive - then it must be on the same IDE cable as the 1st drive - the first drive being set to master & the second to slave. Is this the case, or can I used another IDE cable that is connected to another device - a DVD drive, for instance. Many thanks for any help, Dave
Exactly. The outer one will be master and inner one as a slave. If its new then you need to do couple of more things..... Right click on my computer and select manage..... Select Disk Management...in your right bottom of the disk management, you will see your drive. Right click on it and select initialise(or create partition cant remember).. just click next next and finish. After all this your coputer will format your drive and you can see your drive in my computer~! Edit: Forgot to tell you that if you use other ID cable then you should have a jumber for your master drive~!
Thanks, Karanislove. Do I take it from what you said that the other IDE cable can be used for the second hard drive I plan to install? If that is the case; you say I should have a "jumper" for my master drive. Not entirely sure what you mean here - but are you saying that I can adjust a jumper setting on the 1st drive that will facilitate the use of the second drive on a different IDE cable? The way my IDE cables are are setup to run devices would make it awkward to run 2 hard drives from the one IDE cable without rearranging the connections of my CD-ROM & DVD RW. So, if there is a possibility that I could run my intended second hard drive from my second IDE cable (which has a spare connector) - then this would be more practical - this is why I ask. Many thanks for your help. Dave
Precisely. I'd recommend installing the second Hard Drive on the Secondary slave connector assuming you have an Optical drive installed on the Secondary Master connector. All that in english: Whack the new HDD on the second connector and set the jumper cap to 'Slave' and also set the jumper cap on the DVD drive to 'Master'.
