Hi all, I have a Dell dimension which works perfectly, was using a Lexmark x5150 all in one printer, which has a feeder problem so I ditched it and bought a new P4350 all in one also lexmark. I installed everything as per instructions and all was well, the printer works and everything else is ok until I shut down the pc. When I go to start up the screen is blank except the cursor is flashing in the top left hand corner and nothing happens, as soon as I disconnect the usb cable from the printer the pc fires up as usual, I replace the cable in the printer usb and it all works fine untill I switch off again! I have uninstalled and reinstalled the software twice and the problem is still there. Any suggestions Thanks ioweddie.

    Hello and welcome
It sounds as though a USB specific setting in your BIOS has been incorrectly set. I'm not a 100% positive on this but have a look in your BIOS for anything unusual. Also, does the same thing happen with the printer in a different USB port?

P.S - What's with the profile info in your post?
As it's clearly visible in your mini profile!

Thanks pelvis, it happens in any usb port. I'm not that bright so go easy with me, I don't know anything about bios and when I searced for it, the results were to many to comprehend. My profile was in the post because I copied it over from the wrong forum and ended with 2 posts, I'll get the hang of it as time goes on. Regards ioweddie.

i would probably do a BIOS reset

remove the lid from your pc (obviously with the power cable removed from your pc) while playing inside your pc you need to earth yourself (touch the metal case) about ever min then look on the MB for something like "reset BIOS" or "clear CMOS" this will be three small pins, & there will be a small plastic "jumper" probably on pins 1 & 2 move the jumper from 1 & 2 and put it on 2 & 3 for about 10 seconds then move it back to 1 & 2 replace your pc's lid & plug back in the power cable and turn pc on.

or you could just remove the battery (like a big watch battery) for 10 seconds, but NOT with metal tweesers

congratulations you've just done your first BIOS reset

Hi donkey42 thanks for that, it sounds a bit deep for me, so before I delve in, I have just tried my old printer again and the pc shuts down and fires up ok. I then plugged the new one back in and the fault is back. If this bios thingy was dodgy wouldn't the fault be there with both printers? Could the new printer have a usb recognition problem on start up which conflicts with my pc.
Thanks for your help and thanks to pelvis also as you are both thinking on the same lines. regards ioweddie

yes 2 printers could be faulty, but it's highly unlikley for them to have the same fault, a BIOS reset isn't dodgy, it's also easier to start with the most likley cause of the fault.

If it's possible, i'd try the new printer on another PC and see if the same problem arises.

Hi Guys, tried the printer on another computer and it worked ok and the pc fired up and shut down as it should, so I put the other printer back with its pc but used my usb cable and guess what the mouse wouldn't work. I shut the pc down replaced my usb cable with the other one and all is well again. So I'm going to replace my usb cable tomorrow. Do you think my cable could be iffy?

is the mouse PS/2 or USB because it could be your mouse, but yes start with the cable (but mice arn't expensive, so i'd probably get a mouse too)

    0. Is the printer port configured correctly in your computer's BIOS Setup? Try the various printer modes in your computer's CMOS Setup. ECP+EPP usually works with bi-directional printers, but others may fix the problem.

    1. Is the correct printer cable/header assembly installed and is it plugged-in right? I have seen cases where a baby AT motherboard was upgraded, but the printer cable/header assembly from the old motherboard was used and caused problems, but that is very rare. Also, the cable connecting to the motherboard could be backwards or loose.

    DOS

    2. Does it print from the DOS prompt? Try F8 (F8 or hold the Ctrl Key for Win 98) just as Windows starts to boot, select the DOS prompt from the resulting menu, find a non-zero length text file (one that is 1-2K would be a good choice) (e.g., autoexec.bat or something ending in .txt), and print from DOS with:
    C:\>type autoexec.bat>lpt1:
    or
    C:\>type filename.txt>LPT1:

Click Cancel, turn the printer off, unplug the printer cable, wait a few seconds, reconnect the cable, make sure the printer is on with no error lights, restart Windows, and try again.’ Try the various printer modes in your computer's CMOS Setup. C:\>type autoexec.bat>lpt1:
    or
    C:\>type filename.txt>LPT1:
If that works consistently, the problem is probably in Windows.

    WINDOWS

    3. Is it set-up properly? Be sure Windows is set-up correctly with the correct printer driver and something else (another printer, FAX, etc.) is not assigned LPT1: Be sure the printer is set as the default Windows printer. Try it on another desktop computer. If that works, try another printer on the suspect computer. Uninstalling and reinstalling the printer often fixes problems. Get rid of duplicate printers.

    4. Does it have a stuck print queue? Start>Settings>Printers>double click the printer> Printer>Purge Print Documents

    5. Have you used Windows Help to solve the problem? Start>Help>Contents>Troubleshooting>Windows 98 Troubleshooters>Print.

Brian writes: The troubleshooters in win 98 no longer function bacause of updates for security.to use the troubleshooters now you must reinstall TSHOOT.INF and then remove the registry the key {4B106874-DD36-11D0-8B44-00A024DD9EFF} at [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility.
Then once one is done with the troubleshooters, reinstall the latest update for internet explorer 6.

One should backup the Windows registry before making any chnges to it. Look in regedit help for the procedure... start, run, enter regedit.
