I was originally looking at some Dell Ultrasharp monitors, but the smallest they have is 21.8". I'm looking for a 17" monitor for under $600. Please help me find the best. If there are some nearly as good for a greatly reduced price, please list them as well. Thank you
I forget the exact models, but Sony or Samsung generally seem to have the sharpest CRTs out there. A good LCD monitor tends to cost quite a bit, but you can easily find a CRT 19" monitor under $200, and 17" right around $150. With that budget, you can easily get something bigger. Look at a monitor that can do 1600x1200 @ 75Hz refresh rate for starters. My opinion is never to buy a monitor that you haven't seen in action. $600 is a pretty big budget for a 17" display, and I doubt you'll be spending even half of that these days.
Your location says you're in the UK - is that correct? (flag under your mini-profile next to post) http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/lcd20.html There's some nice screens on there that should be under budget.
I haven't seen any of those in action, but if you're looking at a 17" monitor, a CRT like the Samsung 793DF is around $200. I can't imagine any 17" display costing close to $600. Samsung makes some very sharp displays from what I've seen. If you haven't actually looked at the display, I wouldn't buy it.
If you stick with CRT's, Samsung is definitely the way to go. Sony also has nice displays, but it's really hard to justify. For an LCD, there's not been I've seen under $600 that I was impressed with. I've heard Dell's are pretty nice, but I still haven't seen one myself to give proper evaluation to it. I know some people like Viewsonic, but I've never been impressed by what they have for the extra money they cost. Some of their LCD's aren't too bad, but then again, they're not too cheap. Again, I would recommend not buying a display until you've actually seen it in action.
Of course, i agree with everything BB has advised with. But, if your lokking at any TFT screens, the choice would definately be between the Samsung 960BF or the Viewsonic VX922 which retail at around $380 and $320 respectively. Both are 19 inch and you'll have some cash left over if you choose to go this route. Of course you can go larger, but that's personal preference.
