Hi, i am thinking about upgrading my pc as my graphics card is becoming outdated now and i dont think its up to running the latest games anymore :(, christmas seen me upgrading to AMD, but i had to opt for AGP still as i couldent afford a new graphics card and cpu, now i am thinking about switching to PCI-E, so i can but a new Graphics card, so i will be needing to buy a new motherboard But the socket 939 cpu can stay.

i am thinking of an X1900XT, but found they cost far too much, so i may consider an XFX GeForce 7900 GT (£234 inc VAT)
    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/7900_Series.html

and for the motherboard i am thinking about Asus A8N5X nForce4 OR Asus A8N-SLi SE nForce4 SLi, but may opt for the first one as the SLi mobo may be too much.
    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/ASUS_Socket_939.html

so what do you think? is the 7900gt a good upgrade from my current card?, is it better than a x1800xt and x1900xt?

From what I can tell the 7900GTX slides in between the X1900XT and the 1900XTX. The 7900GT is pretty much on par with the X1900XT.

In the interest of future upgrades, you might look at the A8N SLI over the A8N-E simply because of the SLI support. If you get the vanilla A8N SLI, it shouldn't be that much more. The Deluxe and Premium versions cost $30-40 more than the plain jane A8N SLI.

ummm, yea, i might consider going with a deluxe or premium, but all this upgrade will be for my birthday which is in middle of june, so hopefully, prices might of dropped a little by then, and i maybe able to opt for a more high end motherboard :)

Maybe i could overclock a 7900GT to be performing just as good as a 7900GTX?#

also, could a 7900GT work if i use a DVI to VGA convertor?

Looks good man, the 7900GT is an awesome card, the big deal ones aren't worth the extra cash for those 10 extra frames in Quake 4 (which would already be running in the 100's). best of luck man.

thanks, i just rememberd i had a ps2 and about 45 games to sell, hopefully ebay that at 170, and then rest of money for birthday, i might try get an x1900xt or xtx, coz i like ATi better, and i find ATi's drivers are better to use :), but if i go a 7900GT, i wouldent be complaining :p

Well the price difference would be pretty massive so if you were going to spend that much I'd just as soon wait till July or so when they revamp the line and things get cheaper or new stuff is faster.

i found an x1900xt for around £250, and i am considering to get that or, the gainward bliss 7900GT 512mb which seems to be a pretty good overclocker, but it costs £293 :\

That's very odd as in the US a 7900GT is around $300 whle X1900XT's are closer to $500.

i am confused now, i looked over at rage 3d, and seen this thread http://www.rage3d.com/board/showthread.php?t=33853268, and it seems to me that the x1800XT is better than a 7900GT , so it seems i would be better off getting an X1800XT, is this just rubbish, or is it true with these 2 cards?

i am aware rage 3d is an ATi fansite, but surely there not going to make it sound like x1800XT is beter coz there fans of ATi???

if it really is better, then wohoo, coz its under 200 quid to but an x1800XT

I don't think it is. In the majority of the benchies I've seen the 7800GTX is faster, and the 7900GT is even better so I'm not sure what they were getting at. I mean all tests turn out different and there's always stuff that ATI cards run better but I'm still saying the 7900GT is a better choice.

umm, apparently the 7900GT cant do HDR+aa but x1800xt can, and it seems to show x1800xt winning on loads of benches :s, i really am confused :s

Oh well, if it's better than sweet, it's cheaper too. I wouldn't worry about HDR+AA, it's a nice bonus but I mean if you have to have snazzy lighting and less jaggies just use bloom and FSAA instead, less performance knock. I know you want an upgrade but just keep in mind that this fall we'll be seeing DX 10 cards that are really going to come into their own with games like Crysis and anything with the Unreal 3 engine...

say if i bought somthing like the x1900xt, would that be able to run unreal 2k7 which uses the unreal 3 engine?

or would i have to buy a new card that is direct x 10 generation?

You don't need a DX10 card to run DX10 based games, they scale back pretty well to DX 9 tech. but obviously the performance and quality won't be as impressive. Which is certainly not to say it will look bad, but you won't be seeing the full potential at any rate.

Basically, it's got brand new DLL's and support for Shader Model 4.
Also rumoured is backwards compatibility with previous DX generations has been removed, which means DX9 and DX8 etc.... will be emulated through the CPU.
This is why games from now will run slower.

We'll that's good and bad. Looks like more reason to go with a DX 10 card if you plan on playing UT2k7 and Crysis. Man I don't know where I'm going to get the money from.

An X1900XTX will run the game fine.
You'd get good framrates with a 6800 Ultra at 10x7.
