Hello Everybody, Can any of you offer advice please? the situation is this. My system keeps freezing when I try to run a backup with Nortons Save and Restore. I have a PC running windows XP pro with service pack 2, 2 hard drives 160Gb (MASTER)+ 200Gb (slave) 1Gb of memory (DDR) Intel pentium 4. I am running McAfee Antivirus, Zone Alarm Fire wall, and Spydoctor all for safety and security.
I have just bought and downloaded Nortons "Save and Restore" I have only managed to back up once! Whenever I try and do a back-up it gets to 1% or 5% and then freezes the whole system so I have to reboot! I managed to get onto Norton Support live chat after a wait of about 4 hours! (They must be incredibly busy) and was told to do a "Clean ReBoot" this I did. I logged on as administrator and then run "msconfig" went to the general tab picked selective services, cleared all except "system services and of course "originial boot" which you can't touch anyway. I then went to services and "Hid all microsoft services" stopped all programs except "Nortons save and Restore"
Clicked apply, Ok and rebooted. The system started with bare bones and I could actually run Save and restore. So As the Nortons analysts did not tell me what to do after this I am flummoxed! I mean If I now go to the general tab in mscconfig and click Normal startup I end up reloading whatever program is causing the conflicts! Do I un-install all programs and reinstall one by one, can I use a start up manager to stop them all and start them one by one but in Normal start up Basically I do not know which program is causing the conflict with Nortons Save and Restore but I do know it is not Windows XP Sorry to be so lng winded but reading these threads most of you chaps wanted all the info! any help would be gratefuuly recieved!

Can you post a full list of the services you have to disable in msconfig in order to run Norton Backup?

Hello and thank you for reading my spiel! Right, things have moved on slightly. I un-installed "Save and Restore" and re-installed "Powerquest Drive Image 7" And started at the bare bones. The programs I had un-installed to start with were:AVG (Free Edition) No longer wanted anyway. McAFee anti virus (needed) Zone Alarm Fire Wall ( no longer needed as I am using windows) Spyware Doctor (Needed but cannot use! it seems to be athe program which is causing problems amonst others.)
Mailwasher Pro (neede) Microsoft Activesync ( for my HP Ipaq) Tiscali connection and Diskkeeper which automatically defrags your hard drive.

AnywayI just could not get Save and restore to work! So as I said I uninstalled it re-installed Drive Image 7 and one by one reinstalled the programs. At the moment I have put back on McAfee antivirus, Mailwasher Pro Microsoft Activesync I am connected to tiscali. At the moment I have just done my 6th backup with Drive Image, I back up after each new program However whenever I start Spydoctor Drive Image fails to work! I go to device manager, processes and click on and stop Spydoctor. once it has stopped Drive image works! perhaps you could reccommend a good compatible anti spyware program?
Anyway I went to support in Spydoctor FAQ Backup freezes at 1% I was told to download the latest updates. I did that again! However it still will not let Drive image run, not sure yet about Save and restore, I will try that this morning. Sorry about the config list. I am afraid I am not clever enough to think of that! But thanks a lot for your time and especially your knowledge! I would like to be able to use "Save and restore" with spydoctor or the equivilant. I like to have a firewall, an antivirus and a anti spyware running in conjunction with my backup program. Once again, many thanks MikeT

It looks like your massive suite of security programs are causing the issue.

Let me recommend some good software:

For Antivirus, use Avast Home Edition (Click 'Infected by a virus' in my signature)

For spyware, use Lavasoft's Adaware instead of Spyware doctor. www.lavasoft.de

For a firewall, I suggest you continue to use Zonealarm. The Windows filewall is, well, shite :)

If you would like more information, click 'Windows XP Security Guide' in my signature.

Hello and once again thank you. Well this morning a friend and I have tried all ways to get the programs running together all to no avail. My only success has been with Drive image 7 where if I stop "Spyware Doctor" running I can do a back up! I have done about 7 so far, the last 1/2 hour ago!

Anyway thanks for your input. I have downloaded and saved the three programs you suggest.

1: Adaware Personal Edition 1.6 (antispyware)

    2: Avast Home Edition (antivirus)

    3: Zone Alarm (firewall)

Should I un-install Spyware Doctor, Disable Windows Firewall and Uninstall McAfee antivirus? Then What do you suggest I do first (A) Install "Save and Restore" followed by those three programs or (B) install those three programs first and then "Save and Restore"?

It (hopefully) does not matter too much if things go "pear shaped" as I can always use my recovery disk to get back my Drive image from half an hour ago. Once again, thanks for your help and I shall await your advice on which way I proceed. As a by the by.... it is going to be a right "bummer" when your suggestion works after spending all that money on Spyware doctor and Mcafee anti virus! MikeT

Okay, here goes, the situation is this: I have uninstalled programs as I said earlier. I have installed Zone Alarm so I can go on the internet.

    A quck look at msconfig:

    Startup : zlclient (Zone Alarm)

VTTimer (Don't know what this is?)

    umoni ditto

    jus schedule ditto

    run dll32 cmicnfg

I shall now restart the PC (still in selective startup)

Install "Save and Restore" Check to see if it works if it does I shall then install the other two programs you mentioned. wish me luck!

Nope! It still froze at 5%! I was just running Zone Alarm. I am flummoxed!

I have restored from Drive Image 7 which seems to be working okay except it does not want to work with Spyware Doctor. so when I finish at night I disconnect, stop Spydoctor and just let the backup happen in the wee small hours. I cannot think of what else to do. MikeT
