    Hello guys.

First of all, I'm new here, so ill say hello! :)

Im currently on a Intel Celeron D 2.93GHz (It sucks, i know :p)

And soon im going to be looking at buying an Intel Pentium 4, maybe something around 3.2GHz.

Im only upgrading my CPU because my Celeron is just not running my PC games like i want to, so im wondering if the the Pentium 4 3.2ghz will be better than my current Celeron?

    Thanks in advance.

    - Denic ;)

    Welcome to harwdareforums!

Before Upgrading your CPU, you might want to consider Adding more RAM or new graphics card! [even your celeron should be able to cope with most games]

How much ram do you currently have / whats your graphics card?

What games are you wanting to play on this system?

    Hello.

    I have 2 GIG RAM

And my Graphics card is fairly new - its a 6800 - overclocked and pipes are unlocked.

I want to be playing games like Battlefield 2..

Will you have to change the motherboard aswell? or can it support a pentium?

If you have to chaneg the motherboard, i would reccomend going with an AMD-64 as they have nice big cache's (and support for 64-bit processing, something games will be catching up with soon!).

Not to mention there not a rip off on the price!

I cant go down the AMD route as my board only supports Intel.

So, do you think i should get a diffrence in performance with a Intel Pentium 4 3.2GHz CPU?

    Thanks

    There's been a misunderstanding here.
Impotence asked if your current board can support a Pentium 4 chip.
And then recommended IF you need a new board, you might aswell go with AMD.

And what version is your chipset?

It will run cooler, as Celerons have less casing and it will have a larger cache, this normallt does help games!

I have no clue what version my chipset is.

But i know for a fact its socket 775, ive seen some nice CPU's, and i think im going to go down the Pentium 4 route.

    Thanks for all your help.

Im going to make one last plea for you to go with AMD :p

You can get a AMD-64 3200+ for £103.39 (with heatsink, and 3 yr warrenty), and a MSI motherboard for £40 (a AGP one, you can PCI-E ones for about the same) off microdirect (with overclocking options part of the BIOS).

You might think a motherboard that costs less will not to the CPU justice, but MSI have a reputation for making amazing boards stuffed with features @ decent prices! (I got my one for £60, and i cant move without seeing plugs on it for something!). I REALLY would reccomend a 64-bit CPU! Games like Half-life2 (and its mods, counter strike etc) can allready use the full 64bits of the CPU!...

Of course you would have to have a copy of 64 bit Operating system to take advantage of a 64 bit CPU, but if you cant afford it at the moment, its there as a upgrade option in the future! If you buy the intell.... it will cost you £40 less in the short run.... but you will 'pay' when you want to use 64 bit windows for your games!

Also forgot to mention, be carefull when buying a new CPU (if your going with intell). the reason i asked your chipset was all but one of the Intell sck 775 CPU's on microdirect.com where marked as "Needs Intel 915 chipset or newer".

    Good luck!

I think the Celeron's are quite good these days. I've got a Celeron 2.8GHz and I am more then happy with it. It's powerful enough for my needs anyway.

The Pentium chip will give you a big boost over the Celeron. Not just clock speed, but bus speed as well. The Pentiums have a larger cache, and that alone makes it faster
