Thanks for the tip Pelvis_3 :good: How do you manually install programs within Slax? You've got a complete multimedia system right there!
Just go Here and install your module. It will spit an error out at youm but it still works ok. That's the idea
Oh WOW! I didn't notice the modules section on their website! What a great repository they've got! I really like the modules idea. It seems that the whole Operating System is modular based, meaning it can be customised to one's heart's content! It's a shame that the hard drive installer is a no-go. But Slax runs so well on a USB drive that I suppose it doesn't really matter. The thought of carrying around a complete multimedia desktop in one's pocket is just awesome! I have to say that Slax blows DSL out of the water! DSL may be smaller but it's not exactly faster is it? I think I am going to reinstall SLAX to my USB drive and customise it with a few applications!
Yeah, it's great. They seemed to have covered most of the important apps so far. I've prob got 200MB+ of modules already While DSL is a great distro, i had alot of trouble using it on a pen drive. The MySLAX creator for SLAX just makes it so damn easy I already have 4 ISO's configured with different modules for different purposes. I officially am in LOVE with this distro.
[ot]Just installed DSL on my Compaq M300. It's like a rocket! Works faster than Kubuntu on my main rig..... I am not sure I will keep it but it is just amazing to see a hip of :swear: working so well. Oh, and I bung an audio CD in the tray and it played straight away... that's refreshing..... So if I did need a USB based OS I think this will do the trick..... [/ot]
[ot] The Compaq Armada M300 is actually quite a good laptop! Do you have the Pentium 2 or 3 version? In any case, I thought you were going to install Xubuntu on it? [/ot]
Addis, click here If you want to install new programs, simply download the program modules from the SLAX homepage and save them in the /modules directory on your pen drive Let us know what you think of it!
[ot]My M300 is PIII based. I use the term hip of :swear: as indearment. I actualy quite like it. I had Xubuntu on it and worked lovely. I just had a few hour to kill so I thought, hell..... why not..... In any case, I am toying with the idea of introducing Linux to my in-laws as the M300 is intnded to go to them (they currently have a PII based Armada M700 running the dreadful ME). So I am trying a few things also for my own bit of fun... [/ot]
I'm thinking of trying Mandriva soon, afer I have read-up more. In the interim, I might play around with Slax. New to all this, so does Slax have a bootloader that allows you to boot into Windows or Slax at startup - just like Mandriva? Cheers, Dave.
Not unless you install it on the hard drive. Due to it's 'Live' nature, if it's plugged in to a USB port or a CD in a drive, it will just boot straight from it and load.
Thanks, Pelvis. I think I'll just go with Mandriva when the DVD installation disk arrives. Also, I'm not sure if I can boot from my USB drive, as I didn't see an option to do so when I looked in the BIOS boot menu yesterday. Dave.
