Hi, I'm having a problem with a harddisk I just aquired. My system is working perfectly With a dvd, 2 harddisks. I added the third harddisk to the slave connection with my dvdrom. The system will not boot. The fans go on for about a second then nothing. I unplugged the system and tried again, the same thing. I checked the jumpers on the harddrive, everything is correctly jumpered. At first i thought it might be the power supply 300w. So disconnected the power to the new hd an what do you know the system powered right up. Just to be sure I tried the new hd in another system. This time with a 400w powersupply, and the same thing happened again. With the new hd connected the system will not start. Very confusing, so what is the problem here. Is the new hd bad? Thanks in advance for any help. My System ECS p6s5at Intel celeron 1ghz Toshiba DVDROM 80gb IBM 30gb WD the new HD is a WD 30gb
try using the tools downloadable from Western Digital cos it sound as though you expirenceing a HDD with bad sectors try something like a low level format (destroys data) but give it a go & see what happens
try this: remove one of the drives from the original two and plug the WD in. the system will boot. if u got time, try setting the WD with the DVD in master, and the dvd in slave. although i doubt that it would work. The best thing for you, if my first advise works, is to buy a PCI PATA controller.
Hey thanks for the fast replies I appreciate it! I tried this I disconnected the slave hd and connected the WD result: Will not boot! Same as before. I disconnected both the old HD and set the WD as master and tried to boot result: Same not able to boot. I cant boot the drive so i cant even low level format. i tried one more time with the DVD as master and the WD as secondary slave same result oh well guess it was worth a try. Maybe ill use it as a paper weight or a bookend.
maybe my reply wasn't clear IDE slot 1- OS HD on master, with WD on slave IDE slot 2- DVD on slave, with other HD on master (although i doubt this will work)
try setting the IDE devices to cable select and put the drive you want to be master at the end of the IDE cable and the drive you want to be slave connected to the middle connector (assuming you can set cable select)
I too have the same problem, only difference is that my harddisk is an old one, it worked perfectly before this problem occured. Before this problem occured i was taking out the PC components and fittin them all together. Now i cant even get my PC to start. What do you guys think i have done to my hard disk.
