I'm considering purchasing this card, a 6800XT XFX Geforce 6800XT PVT42ENDE3 Video Card - Retail at Newegg.com I don't game, really so I just need it to be able to play dvd movies and the occasional tux racer type thing, again not a gamer. It needs to be able to power two 19" LCDS. Is this a good deal?
That's a good deal. It'll be more than enough for you're DVD's (and penguin themed racing games) Personally I'd recommend getting something even cheaper like a 6600 or even 6200 AGP if you can find them with Dual DVI.
Thanks for the replies everyone. The dual DVI is the hard part. I"m having problems finding it on any lesser cards than this. I really want to use nvidia becuase of their good linux drivers. Heh, my penguin themed racing game is the most gaming stress I'll ever put on this machine, I'm after fast compile times. In any event, one hundred dollars is a pretty good deal for the card. Better to buy a card tha's overkill than to buy one that can't handle what you want it to do if you ask me.
True, and at least it'll have some resale value if you ever buy/build a new system and sell you're old one. Might as well just go with it, they might make Tux Racer 2 with HDR lighting support and paralax mapping that'll require a decent card, but you'll have one!
Alright, since it seems that an actual VGA cable for my xbox isn't possible, i'd like to find a TV card that will be able to display when I play games on my xbox. My current machine will play it, but really the game just slows down. Is this because of the video card or is it the tuner, or both? What should I look for in what will be able to deal with an xbox? It needs to be linux compatible, but i'll worry about that. Just let me know what to look for in a setup to handle it. Thanks, Matt
Get a cheaper card with a dual head. There is no need to waste your money on a 6800. I just got a cheap ATI Radeon x550 for a friend to do the same sort of work and its great. An ATI x1300 or x550 would do what you want and its cheaper.
thank you. however, as i said i'm looking for nvidia to their good linux drivers. what would be a good nvidia card for what i want to do?
I was just broadening your view by suggesting some ATI cards. I agree with what Exfoliate said about nvidia cards.
