Quick question. If I was to hypothetically get a widescreen LCD monitor would games look alright on them. Reviews on newegg seem to point towards that conclusion but I'm not postive that it'd scale properly and provide me with a nice natural image with games that don't have a widescreen option built right in. Anyone know or have any experience with this?

Depends on the game really, i am using my widescreen laptop as a reference. Most of the games i play offer widescreen resolutions except for diablo II and i think FEAR, the game does appear a bit stretched out compared to my CRT monitor, but its not so distorted that everything looks short and fat. Granted on a larger screen it may seem more distorted, for example if it was like 20'' you may see more distortion than on a 15.4 which is what i have.
Games that look normal on my 15.4 widescreen
    Oblivion
    Half life 2
    Guild Wars
    Diablo 2 (with minimal stretching)
    Battlefield 2
    Doom 3
    FEAR
Thats all i've tested, as i said, if you don't go too big with the screen there may not be much distortion, and you could also try forcing resolutions using software or editing .ini files in the games. (i used to do that for rainbow six 3 Raven Shield)
    Hope This helps:cool:

Widescreen monitors are comming more common so more games will start to have native support for this. There are many games that currently do not support widescreen resolutions eg BF2. However you can manually set the game rez in most of them.

To see the differences view this tut on manually setting the BF2 resolution, the reason I posted this is that it has screen shots showing the result of choosing different resolutions.

Thanks guys, appreciate it. It's good to know that most big deal games are supporting it. It doesn't really matter with the old ones so much as I've kind of played out what I was most interested in but it's good to see it's getting adopted. I'll probably get one when I comes time to upgrade, likely next summer.

Vol7ron will probably disagree but in my book yeah 12ms and under is just dandy judging from what I've read and seen.

whoa that's freaking weird. How it kinda zooms in on the image but only in the vertical dimension. Also, why is the picture different in the widescreen semi-support screenshot? The gun is now slightly to the left of the ammo indicator at bottom compared to the original.

Yeah we had some good discussions but then he went and got himself banned so that's why we don't see him around.

vol7ron started attacking members and eventually seemed to believe he could mouth off to a mod. There were also some legal threats (and others) he made after being banned. Needless to say, if someone is going to pull that crap, then it's not worth it to have them participate here.

Nice try vol7ron, re-registering as Pdiddy. You've been banned for good reason, now stay the fuck off the forums.

IP address I suppose? You know something told me he'd try something like that, it's interesting that he'd want to come back after being banned.

I think he wanted to see why he got banned
I've read his previous posts, he mouthed off a mod after the mod made fun of a post he posted. Now, I know the mod said he wasn't trying to make fun of the post, but in a way he did saying that the post was weird
he seems like a guy with not much patience, and argued with people that he thinks are wrong, but he has tried to help alot of ppl, and has helped me out of a couple of times
I don't think he should have been banned; I thought the rules stated you can't be banned automatically if you have over 100+ posts; I wonder if he ever got a warning first
    ahh well

    ....no, i am not vol7ron lol :p
