The plug and play of my USB (laptop Toshiba Satellite) doesn't work properly. When I connect a memory stick for example, the explorer doesn't display the device. Yet the LT seems to recognize the stick as Adobe Photoshop automatically starts up and identifies photo's on it. The icon 'safely remove hardware' also appears. Strangely, the Explorer displays a 3,5 floppy disk (A), but that doesn't contain any information.

When I rightclick "my computer" and open "disk management" the memory stick appears {(F)} and I can approach it. Changing the device name doesn't help.

The Explorer recognizes the stick (or any other device at the USB) (only) directly when it is connected right from the start.

    What can I do?

    Thanks

The first thing you should check is Device Manager

Right-click 'My Computer' > Properties > 'Hardware' Tab > Device Manager

Expand the USB devices hive and look for your USB stick. How does it appear? Is there a question mark or exclamation mark next to the device?

    Thanks

No, there isn't a question mark next to the USB. It says:

    Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB U2.0 Enhanced Host Controller - 24CD
    Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C2
    Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C4
    USB Mass storage device
    USB Root Hub
    USB Root Hub
    USB Root Hub.

In an earlier stage Alcohol120% was initiated when I tried to open the stick (and it didn't work either); I have removed that program.

    Anything else?

So just to clarify, the USB device shows up under Disk Management and is assigned the drive letter F:\?

What is the status under the USB device name in Disk Management? Does it say 'Online'?

Can you access the files on your USB drive through a command prompt?

Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt

    Type:

    Code:
    F:
    Then type:

    Code:
    dir
    Were you successful?

    Thanks M.

Under disk management it is said "Healthy (active)".

Via the command prompt I can go to the F-device, but when I type "dir" it says Volume etc but ends with "File not found" and no content of files is being displayed.

    So?

Download TweakUI and make sure you dont have your drive letter turned off.

    Also try mapping your drives.

Windows XP may also be assigning more than one drive the same letter, so try the following steps:

    1) Go to Control Panel
    2) Open Administrative tools
    3) Open Computer Management
    4) Open Disk Management
    5) Change your Removable Disk (in the dialog window on the bottom right, right click it to change) to another drive letter

Thanks for the reactions. I already had changed the drive letter, but to no avail. Everytime I remove it and put it back it appeard as floppy A.

I am not sure how to download tweakui but will try to find that out now.

    Any other ideas.

TweakUI will not help you in this case. In fact, I find it very bizarre it was even mentioned

'File Not Found' refers to the fact that Windows thinks the drive is empty.

Which version of Windows are you using and how did you go about installing the USB drive in the first place? Are you using Windows built-in drivers, or the manufacturer's drivers?

    Indeed, Tweakui didn't help.

I am using windows XP. The plug and play has worked before. I vaguely remember that there was a driver installed on one of the Msticks I have used and that I have removed it. So, I am not sure which drivers I am using in this case. I thibnk the original windows xp but am not sure. Anyway, no Mstick whatsoever is now directly recognized anymore.

    Thanks for any further effort.

Okay, what I suggest you do is plug in the USB drive and go straight to the Device Manager.

Right-click the 'USB Mass Storage Device' and choose 'Uninstall'. Once it has uninstalled, unplug the USB drive and restart your computer.

Once your computer has rebooted, insert the USB drive and the drivers will reinstall automatically.

    Did that help?

No, I am sorry, problem remains unsolved. After the reboot the new hardware is found, the mass storage device reinstalled but the device appears as a 3,5floppy A.

What does that drive says in another computer????
However, also check your Event Viewer if you are coming across some errors in there. Copy and paste the errors here....System and Applications events

Megamaced, that's because you are a noob, like most people on this site. You think you know everything but end up a few bricks short of a wall. Try to bash anything I post ever again and I will not help you at all on anything.

Ander, If you care to hear my suggestion, read on. If not, then just ignore it. There are many reasons why this could not be showing up, but you should try the following:

Open Tweak UI (I use 2.10.0.0) and goto "My Computer" and then "Drives". Make sure whatever drive that you place a checkmark next to whatever the drive you USB port should be on.

The problem you're experiencing generally happens when your computer has assigned more than one device to the same drive letter. Make sure a drive is available for your USB device (make sure F:\ is checked)

Also, go into Autoplay and make sure "Enable Autoplay for Removable Drives" is also checked. And again, go into the "Drives" under Autoplay and make sure it is checked there as well. If you have any questions about the drive letter, just check them all to be safe.

If this doesn't solve your problem, we'll have to go into some more detail. If we can't solve it, a system restore may need to be in order. Also, run Chkdsk and make sure your computer is defragged as system files sometimes get corrupted. Then finally you may want to get a registry cleaner to help clean up that little puppy.

Well if that's the case, why are you here? We do not want people on these boards with that kind of attitude.

I wasn't 'bashing' your post, I was merely offering constructive criticism. I do not feel that TweakUI will help us in this case.[/ot]

Well, first of all: I made a slight booboo. The command prompt works. I had made up a back-up of the stick, and probably used the cut button instead of the copy button. So it was empty when I approached it. There is now info on it and the prompt displays the file names.

In between I have changed the letter of the drive to G which was previously linked to an unconnected network cable (as "My PC' said). As there never was a cable, I have used this letter now for one of the two USB-slots. But the problem is still there. When I reboot the PC without stick, and plug it than it, I can see it as a "disconnected network device". When I remove the Mstick and plug it again I don't get the A-floppy thing, probably because I have unchecked the A-drive with TweakUI. I haven't checked yet if "A"reappears if I check it in TweakUI. By the way, it doesn't make a difference it seems in which of the two plugs I put it ("F" or "G"). The stick works properly in other competers where the name of the stick is correctly displayed.

    So, .....

Okay, so we've pretty much established that the problem lays with Windows Explorer only.

In the Windows Explorer address bar, type:

    Code:
    G:\
And press enter (or type F:\ if your Mstick is mapped to F)

Can you see the contents of your USB stick in Windows Explorer now?

Yes, I can, but only when I type that in the internet explorer. Not when I type it in the "My Computer" screen.

Good point, why would you guys want someone that actually knows something? Attitude or not, I haven't learned anything from being here and continue to hold arguments with people that have no idea what they're talking about.

    Okay, bye.

Looking at your post history, not just in this thread but others as well, you seem to have a real attitude problem. Neither myself, nor anybody on this forum, deserves to be mocked because we may or may not have got something wrong.

So taking all this into account, I think it's best for all of us if you don't come back.

    So you're now banned.[/ot]

Anderjasje, apologies for this! I will get right back on your problem in a minute
