Hey guys. I am currently on 8meg internet using a normal modem so my USB ports are maxed out, whats worse is I just had to buy a new mouse since my other one died, Logitech G7 which is all USB powered no external plug. Currently cannot afford to spend £80 ish on a router so was wondering if there is anything else I can do since I have no mouse for now as every time I try and connect it while the modem is plugged in it complains that there is not enough power available. In device manager I have 2 USB Root Hubs listed, 1 has everything on it including the modem using all the power, the other is totally empty and since I don't know much about how USB works I was wondering if there is a way to use the other hub somehow. I have tried all USB ports on the back (LAN1_USB34 and LAN2_USB12), I have even tried connecting addon USB ports on the motherboard connectors USB78, USB56 and USB910 but still the devices showed up on the same out of power hub. Is the other hub even available for use at all or just sits there for no reason? Would I be able to buy a powered external USB box and connect my mouse through that ok? Would prefer not to as I must save for a decent wired/wireless router. Hell id even settle with half my net speed to 4mbps for now if it would free up some power and if it would even be possible. You could buy a self powered USB hub. That would solve the power problems and give you extra USB ports. You could also buy a powered PCMCIA USB hub that slots into your laptop's PC card slot Both solutions come with an external power supply. Alternatively, you could buy a cheap home grade DSL modem router, for about £35 on eBuyer
Well I am gonna go for a USB hub since I am unable to find any way at all to stop it erroring about USB bandwidth limit exceeded, but not sure which one to get as it is pretty hard to find reviews on any hubs :/ THIS is the choice I will have later when I pop into PC World full of people that don't know anything. Does it not matter with USB hubs or do some work better than others?
Pretty much any USB hub will do the job. Just make sure it's self powered and comes with it's own AC adaptor
