also if i install it on hdd 2 and keep running like im doing now with hdd1 and xp is on both hdds will i have any problems with it trying to boot 2 windows xp at once.

would this work also installing xp to hdd2 then swapping it to master and then re-formating hdd1 as it is messed up big time with virus and errors.

What do you want to do? Put the 80GB in your current crappy PC as slave and install windows on it so you dont have to do it when it goes into your new PC?

No this will not work, whenever a new mobo is introduced you need to do a format and a reinstall of windows. If you have stuff on your current computer that you want to move over to the new machine, Install windows on the new HDD in the new PC and then plug your old HDD in as a slave. You will then be able to copy the files you want over.

so it would be a waste of time then cos it would just be wiped again . so if i keep the 80gb as slave on old pc and add what i want then when im ready to start the new one the 10gb virus ridden one and it will be formated then install windows to that then plug in my 80 as slave to once its done then swap over .

I would run the new HDD as your primary hard disc in your new system. It is bound to be faster than your old 10GB thing.
