Ok, i dont know if this problem is related to software or hardware, but for the past 2 installs of windows, my computer has been so slow, nearly 600mb of my ram is used, apps taking ages to load and other crap like in GTA SA i am lagging (graphics lag), i dunno whats going on :(

I have 2 hdd's in my comp, both on Diffo IDE cables, could that be causing lag?

happens to me sumtimez wen the cables arent pushed in properly. i wud do a low level format, if ur using a wd hd, use data lifeguard tools. shud sort out the problem. it cud possibly be a virus on a different partition or sumthing

got me, i would NOT have thought you would need to format and start again, did you do a full NTFS format not
    Code:
    format /q
yes, i am grasping at straws, to be honest i don't have a clue what could be wrong, have you tried the usual crap, virus & spyware, beyond that, i dunno

if out if no where your computer slows down (after just 2 installs), then its most likely spyware, get spyware sweeper (the best in spyware protection)

if its not spyware, then those two installs are slowing your comp. down, I would then suggest upgrading to 1gb ram

Ummm, i did do a full format, apparently defrag tools are crap unless done outside windows because the defrag toold cant defrag system files and files in use, so all that green thats showing as system files is also very very fragmented.

I did do a test on prime 95 when i pushed my CPU to 2.9ghz and it detected FATAL Error, Hardware Error and my cpu temps keep shooting up to 50degrees.

I have 1GB ram, just it says 512mb coz i keep putting one stick in my other comp, it got so slow once it was too much, took the 512mb right out of the other computer and back in my main.

That's weird will, I'm sure you've run the virus scans, spyware sweeps, and whatnot but if you haven't used it recently giveing Tuneup Utilities 2006 might be a good plan, clean out the old registry and correct some program files.

if it was a virus, itd probably be a bootsector, you better check your processes running. and run netstat to see if your internet is laggy.

it could be your hd is going bad, your powersupply is too weak, you need to update drivers (check connections in device manager to make sure your controllers are operating properly).

You might have a point about the HDD as these things happen but he's got a killer powersupply and his drivers wouldn't just start to cause slowdown randomly, he'd know from the get go if they were bad or too old. But good thinking anyway man.

I got ATi catalyst 6.1 drivers, i recently had the latest ATi drivers but they were not performing as good for some reason as better ones, and i thought, i havent gained anything at all from newer drivers, so i go back to an older one as the 6.1 drivers were the last drivers to have this special smartshader option were you can have loads of effects in games like RGB cycle were all colours change through the RGB cycle.

I aint sure about the HDD, any tests to check?, i hope it aint the hdd, if it is, its a disaster on its way :\

    Hi, please u do this
    1. delete the temporary Internet file.
    2. delete the temporary system file.
    3. after this defragment the all drives u have.
    4. also scan Ur drives .
    5. If problem is not solved then u run a software system mechanic.
it is the best way to increase ur performance.
or formate the hard disc if possible after shift ur data on other hard disc.
