I have an ASUS A8v motherboard with a VT8237 chipset. I have recently bought A Western Digital WD2500KS Caviar SE 250GB 7200RPM SATA2/300 16MB hard drive, the trouble being that the hard drive is not being detected. Could this be to do with the motherboard using sata 1 and the drive sata 2?Please can someone advise me what to do, eg do I need some sort of adapter to convert from sata 1 to sata 2????

Hey Arj, it seems all versions of the VT8237 chipset were designed for SATA Type I. So if you are using a SATA Type II drive with the VT8237 you will have to follow the manufacturers jumper settings to lock the data rate to 150mb/sec in order for the drive to be recognized.

Here's a link to a .pdf document about setting the jumper on the back of your HDD.

    I hope this helps,

    Greetings,

    Marcus

Where is it not being detected? In BIOS or in Windows?
It's not the SATA connection. SATA I and II are cross compatible. SATA II just offers a faster burst rate over SATA I.

    Thanks for the comments guys.

The drive is not detected in BIOS, as I am freshly installing windows. I have tried the different jumper settings with no success.

After changing Jumper settings in SATA 2, make sure that you have setted both the drives accordingly in your BIOS. I mean you have to set the Windows drive on 1 and another sata on 2...It will be done in you configure boot devices...
But check your Mobo's specification first if it supports SATA 2 before doing anything with the jumpers..

You might want to make sure the SATA controller is enabled in BIOS, if you haven't already.
