Since windows last decided to update itself yesterday ive had nothing but trouble with Data Execution Prevention. Everytime i open any file other than explorer it says its closed the program due to DEP. I can't even file search DEP because it closes that down as well. Im running windows xp sp2 and mcafee security center. Any solutions? Thanks in advance
Dep windows is good at downloading even crapier updates than the updates that are already installed, that's one of the reasons i defected to kubuntu, there'll probably another crapy update to fix the problems created by previous updates, and then the whole process begins again
Dep yeah i got a windows media player update and now my windows media videos won't play or if they do everything is tinted red, bullcrap.
Dep read that before, will try to find how to fix it Edit: i cant find it, try messing with the options and menus & stuff, cos i'm nearly sure its an option or something, and i don't think uninstalling and reinstalling it will do any good (cos options are stored in registry)
No, you can't turn it off. you can have it set to minimum programs and that is what it was on anyway. I can't even go to microsofts help and support forum because the DEP keeps closing it for my own protection. I don't need the anti-virus protection thats what the firewall on my mobo and mcafee security centre is for. Why did they send me an update. Personally "If it aint broke don't fix it" is my motto. Microsoft are ruddy useless
Well despite talking to several people i know who supposedly are employed as network ans system engineers i am still unable to open:- my documents, my computer, microsoft help and support, and also type any file name in the run command box. There is a piece surrounding DEP on wikipedia on how to turn it off completely. Which leads me to my next point. Has it always been present on my system and is it just the update that has messed things up? and if i do remove it completely from my system are there any serious implications involved? Also where can i find my system dialogue box as i can't find it in control panel?
Boot your computer in safe mode. Go to C:\Windows\ntbtlog.txt Look for entries that start with 'Fail'. Look in the Event Viewer as well
This is alien invasion time!! Without doing anything at all to my PC the problem went away just as bizarrely as it had arrived.
