Hi I have a Gateway 500sand it is almost 3 years old, I just bought an Ati Radeon X1600 Pro 256mb AGP and it can run at either 4X or 8X. The problem is that my motherboard only supports 4X and I want it to run in full 8X. I dont wanna buy any new hardware like the processor or the memory and I was thinking if somebody could help me to find a motherboard that can support AGP 8X, as mentioned before, withouth changing the processor or memory. This is my configuration: Processor Intel Pentium 4, 2400 MHz 133MHz external bus BIOS Intel Corp. Download [google]CPU-Z[/google] and find out what core and socket the CPU uses. I'm pretty sure of what the socket is, but I'd like to make sure before recommending anything.
Hi thanks for replying this is some of the information you requested using CPU-Z: Processor 0 -- Core 0 -- Thread 0 Processors Information ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Processor 1 (ID = 0) Number of cores 1 Number of threads 1 (max 1) Name Intel Pentium 4 Codename Northwood Specification Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40GHz Package Socket 478 mPGA (platform ID = 2h) CPUID F.2.7 Extended CPUID F.2 Brand ID 9 Core Stepping C1 Technology 0.13 um Core Speed 2402.5 MHz (18.0 x 133.5 MHz) Rated Bus speed 533.9 MHz Stock frequency 2400 MHz Instructions sets MMX, SSE, SSE2 L1 Data cache 8 KBytes, 4-way set associative, 64-byte line size Trace cache 12 Kuops, 8-way set associative L2 cache 512 KBytes, 8-way set associative, 64-byte line size FID/VID Control no If you need the rest of the info let me know. thanks...
You just need a socket 478 board. Pretty well all support DDR and AGP 8x. To be honest you are gonna find it tough to find a new one. They seem to be getting more rare everyday. Im persuming you have a micro ATX setup at the moment? I found this, it only supports DDR2700 though so its not really an option but I had to post it anyway! Ive had a look to see if a BIOS update will make it support DDR266 but it doesnt. ASUSTek (P4RD1-MX) Asus P4RD1-MX Motherboard - P4 Socket 478 ATI Radeon Xpress 200 mATX 10/100 LAN (ATI Radeon X300 Graphics) If your case is ATX (and not mATX) this is a cheap one... ASUSTek (P4V800D-X) Asus P4V800D-X Motherboard - P4 Socket 478 VIA PT880 Ultra ATX 10/100 LAN With SATA and Dual DDR im tempted myself! Here is another mATX motherboard..... ASRock P4I65G Vid/Snd AGP (Socket 478) Motherboard This has the Intel Sprindale too. I couldnt say its better than the VIA and SiS chips but it was marketed that way a few years back. Here is another springdale ATX board.... DFI PS85-BL P4 800 ATX skt 478 Here is a better spec of this board. DFI Product for Mainboard I personally would go for the Asrock mATX board or the Asus ATX board, even though they dont have the intel chipset. All have Dual DDR which is a bonus. I dont suppose SATA is an issue but they all support it plus the first Asus one has RAID too.
Yup. While some people don't like Via chipsets, I've never had one give me any trouble and I've used 20+ different motherboards. One thing to keep in mind is that you will need to reinstall Windows for best results, given that the chipset will not be the same as what you currently have.
