Adobe Labs - Downloads: Flash Player 9 Update

...Be warned though, it's still in beta. Very early beta. Actually, more like alpha. In fact, if you've ever wanted to see Firefox on Linux crash as much as IE on Windows, now's your big chance. Still, it does support ALSA now, direct-rendered video, and plays all the Flash stuff out there. Ehh, I hate tough decisions!

When I saw the thread, I was overjoyed. Shame its still alpha quality, it should improve though.

Adobe can take flash player and shove it. Nice of them to think about the linux users out there. Too bad they are neglecting all other alternative OSen.

I only use flash because of websites that require it. :danger:

I will be switching to gnash when it can get out of alpha.

    Mixed results for me.

I tested YouTube which requires Flash 7 and CNET TV which requires the latest Flash.

Both worked fine using Firefox under Xubuntu.

Under Kubuntu, Firefox crashed whilst loading CNET TV but played YouTube OK. Konqueror did exactly the same. Opera didn't crash on CNET, but it still didn't play it at all. :(

I noticed that the play/pause controls on YouTube were a little unresponsive whilst using Flash 9 on all of the browsers.

On a good note though, at least the audio works and is in sync with the video

This is old news but in case anybody didn't know, Flash 9 Beta 2 was released November 20. It's stable enough now to replace the ageing and retarded Flash 7 we have been stuck with for god knows how long.

    Anti-Trend's link is still valid

I thought I posted a news article on the newer beta build back in November, but I can't find it now. *shrug* In any case, this build seems a lot more stable, I've been using it since it came out and I haven't really had any major problems with it at all.

Why do you suppose that flash player is such a CPU hog? 7 worked well enough, but 9 eats up all of my CPU. Admitadly, that is not much (450Mhz), but at the low end of the CPU spectrum you begin to spot the programs that have not been well optimized fairly quickly.

Leave it to Adobe to screw up a relatively simple concept. Oh well, at least the second beta is an improvement.

With the second beta, my 2.16GHz AXP CPU is 30% used when watching a youtube video. :(

I'm gonna try it now. The buggy piece of crap has been the cause of firefox locking up when I go to certain websites with lots of flash ads.

It seems Adobe is making out that Flash isn't supported / doesn't work in Opera and Konqueror. The Flash installer won't even let you point the codec at Opera's plugin directory. Of course Opera and Konqueror are set up to use Firefox's plugin directory automatically so this slight hitch doesn't really matter anyway.

This whole thing seems strange because as we know, Flash 9 *does* work in Opera and Konqueror. In fact it works pretty well. :)
