I have an older Gateway with a MSI Athlon Motherboard rated at 133-MHz. Will this handle XP Home operating system? I see the specifications listed under XP Home is 233 MHz. What happens (or won't happen) if I try to put XP Home on that machine? All suggestions appreciated. Thanks Rodney
It sounds like you're confusing the FSB with the CPU speed. No Athlon CPU runs slower than 500MHz. XP probably would not install itself on the system if it didn't meet the minimum requirements, but if it did, you'd find it to be unbearably slow.
My PIII 650Mhz ran XP quite happily with 128MB of RAM at first and then 768MB (booting took ages ) Not recomended but possible. Windows XP is a "hungry" OS and using a low-end computer will not really allow you to enjoy XP to the max (can't beleive I just wrote this... :chk: ). Just something to think about.....
i think i remember a magazine saying that "XP could run on a 500Mhz CPU & 128Mb RAM, however i wouldn't recommend it, i would say the minimum requirements are: CPU = 700Mhz 256Mb RAM 32Mb grfx
If you can, go or Windows 2000 instead, it's less bloated with unnecessary extras and a much lesser computer can handle it with ease. Plus it's a lot cheaper and still supports newer software because it's so similar in design as XP.
I found one of microsoft's sites that answered my question very well, it is Windows XP Upgrade Advisor. This program analyzes your computer and gives you all the possible problem areas etc., quite interesting. Thanks to all who replyed above. rodney
Yea! you would need TinyXP or there is a student version.... I have about three different versions, there is a 128 mb version and a 295 mb version. I think Xp main version is 695 mb,Or something close to that. And yes it possible to run Xp even on older pc's.. I have run XP on 333Mhz with 128 ram and it runs real good. But this is using a strip down version of XP.
