First of all, hello to all members of HWF.

I just want to know whats the impact of a CPU with a high FSB Speed. Ive been hearing that an Opteron 180 is just as great as the X2 4800+. Both have the same speed clock and L2 Cache, but the FSB Speed of the Opteron is 1000 and the x2 is 2000. Im confused.

But everyone that I ask, they still choose the Opteron.

    Thanks.

most AMD cpu's have 2000mhz fsb, yea its 1000 x 2, i think the opterons core is better, there used in servers but seem to do better than X2's in games aswell. Opterons are also vv good overclockers, they also run cooler, some people have got an opteron 165 (1.8ghz) to run at 2.8ghz with voltage bump of course, i googled it.

    Athlon 64 X2 vs. Opteron

Check the above link out, read some of the posts :).

Technically, the Athlon64 and Opterons don't use an FSB, they use a hypertransport interconnect to communicate.

Hypertransport practically is the fsb, unless the fsb is on the northbridge which amd mobo's dont have, so its a direct link from cpu to memory?

HTT and FSB are analogous but are also very different. It would probably be better not to say it is a FSB.

HyperTransport isn't just for an FSB replacement. It's an interconnect, like PCI, PCI express, ISA, etc. AMD's made much use out of it with the Athlon64/Opteron, but that doesn't mean it's only limited to that. nVidia uses it in their nForce chipsets as an interconnect between the MCP and SPP chips.
Zeus is correct in his statement. HTT can be used in lieu of an FSB, but is not just an FSB.

nVidia's fancier names for a northbridge and southbridge chipset combo. Intel did that when they started the MCH and ICH naming with their i8xx series chipsets.
