    Hi,

    The following hardware:
    PCI bus
Intel 82845 Processor to AGP Controller - 1A31
    NVIDIA Vanta/Vanta LT

are sharing the same memory: 000A000-000BFFFF

While I have other memory conflicts, most with the Vanta card and one including the DMA controller, I would like to know if the above:

    1) could be responsible for 100% cpu usage & inordinate DPCs
    2) is normal

The system: Intel P4, 256RAM, XP Home sp2, pagefile is set to 512-1024

There are no viruses, spyware, etc. The problem began after I installed sp2.

I tried going to the Device Manager to change the memory addresses, but it won't let me.

I'm more comfortable with code & DOS, so any insight would be helpful. thank you

IRQ or memory address sharing would not cause increased CPU usage. Rather, if there was a memory address sharing issue, your computer would most likely not boot and / or crash regulary.

I do not nessacarily see the memory address sharing as a problem. I assume your nVidia card is functioning correctly? If you want to make changes, you should go into the computer's CMOS setup and ensure that hardware PnP is enabled. There should be an option to 'reset' the hardware configuration so next time the computer boots the information is written again dynamically. And while I am on the subject of the CMOS, don't reset the BIOS completely because that will most likely cause more problems!

The 100% CPU usage is most likely down to programs running in the background. Open up the Task Manager and click the 'processes' tab. Click the 'memory' row twice to sort the list of programs in order of most memory hungry. Disable / uninstall any un-needed background services. If you need help, post the list of services on this forum

From Windows 2000 (which applies to XP Home and Pro), there's virtual IRQ's. There's only IRQs 0-15, some of which are reserved. Windows creates virtual IRQs as part of making the system happy.

Thanks mega (especially for the TM click trick -- never ran across that before),

I suspected the 'sharing' wouldn't be the cause, but I'm trying to rule things out. Since both you & Big B seem to the think the problem lies elsewhere, I won't reset my CMOS yet.

I've already ruled out background programs, having disabled and/or 'killed' all non-windows programs/threads at one time or another without success.

Insofar as whether my video card is running correctly, I have to assume it is (or at least it was before I upgraded to SP2).

Essentially, the problems I'm having are:
    1) aggravizingly slow page refreshes with both the web & assorted games I've played on the system before.
    2) 'stuttering/skipping' sound ... within games, audio cds, & video clips
    3) video that freezes (but I suspect it has more to do with the sound problem above)

The above symptoms do not occur always (except during games) nor immediately, but within a half hour they do begin...

Would you know if SP2 has additional memory requirements (video, ram, etc)? When I searched MSDN, all I found was '256 RAM' minimum
