Recently my computer was damaged by an electrical storm and the Motherboard and USB ASDL modem were relplaced and I was told that a repair had been done to Windows to accomodate the new motherboard. (I did not do the repairs myself.)

Now when I switch on I can sometimes connect to the Net and sometimes cannot. In this latter case I switch off, switch off at the wall and switch on again . Usually I can then connect to the net.

I have tried uninstalling the modem driver software, cleaning the Registry with CCleaner and reinstalling the driver but this does not resolve the problem.

Do you have any further suggestions? Please note that I am fairly new to this sort of thing so simple instructions would be appreciated.

I have a desktop computer running XP Home with no wireless or Ethernet connections and am not connected to a network. Just one computer with the ADSL modem connected directly to the phone socket and via a USB cable to the computer.

Im guessing modem is struggling to connect to the exchange.
As to fixing the problem... it could be a bitch! I bought a PCI ADSL modem once and it used to take forever to connect. I ended up buying a USB one.

Instead of turning your PC off just try unplugging the USB lead, wait a moment until windows makes a noice then plug it back in. Maybe windows is having difficulty in loading the drivers upon startup.

:good: an ethernet router is a vv much easier way to use DSL, i recommend you upgrade the USB DSL modem (probably provided free from your ISP):good:
