ok having some hard drive problems.

well basically it's on it's last legs and is about to kick the bucket.

i want to bang in a decent drive, so was thinking scsi at 10,000 rpm and 16mb cache.

reason being is my motherboard hasn't got sata on.

however after a bit of digging i've come across pci sata for enabling non sata boards with sata.

not being a know it all! if i fit this pci sata controller into a pci slot and then fit a western Digital Raptor X 150GB WD1500AHFD 10,000RPM SATA 16MB Cache.

    would this setup work?
would it work as quick as it should do?
what other options do i have?

yeah, but you would need power cable adaptors (i think SATA cards come with data cables)
    it should do
as you mentioned SCSI, SCSI would be a way to go, but it would be a very expensive way to go

think i've decided on one of these not as good as the raptor one but cost wise and simplicity i think it should be the best option

    Maxtor MaxLine III 250GB 7L250R0 ATA-133 16MB Cache

well that drive is an IDE drive, so you don't need a SATA controller card

BTW: Maxtor didn't have the best reputation, however, Seagate took over Maxtor earlier this year and increaced the warrenty on Maxtor drives to 5 years, but i'm unsure wether the Seagate takeover has improved the quality of Maxtor drives, although Maxtor were very good at replacing dead drives (paperweights) but you could say bye bye to your data, but with Maxtor now giving a 5 year warrenty, i guess they must be ok now

yeah decided that not going sata would be simpler and cheaper, by the looks of it i wouldn't be gaining all that much, and potentially have multiple problems of it working perfectly.

it is the 5 year warranty the one i'm looking at and i think it's a maxtor sitting in there right now thats about to die, i regularly burn dvd discs of all my photos and stuff i dont want to lose so shouldn't cause me any heartache should the new one fail on me, woe be tide it if it does, maxtor will not be on my shopping list in future!

maxtor are off my shopping list too, Seagate are generally the most reliable, but i've heard some good things about WD and Samsung HDD's (since i've been on HWF)

having said that, i've got a dead Seagate HDD, I've got an RMA it's just waiting to be sent back,1 bad HDD doesn't make all HDD's from that manufacturer bad, i've had a few old Maxtor HDD's go down on me[ot]as you might say[/ot]

Edit: but they are all old Maxtor HDD's, (a 20Gb and a few 8.4Gb drives, and a few opinions from other HWF users (from before the Seagate takeover)

i know ATA stands for: Advanced Technology Attachment or Advanced Technology Adaptor

but i dont know what the 300 is indicating

but i will try to find out

Edit: Seagate Barracuda 10 spins at 7200rpm

Edit: i can't find what the 300 from ATA-300 is refering to
