To be honest I cant see how it can be a slave when you are only able to get 1 harddrive on the ide channel. The chances are it wont even show in BIOS.

What harddrives and rom drives have you got in your system?

what have i missed, i thought an IDE channel could be connected to 2 IDE devices, but yeah, is HDD visible in BIOS[ot]i thought he just needed to initalise and format the drive:confused:[/ot]

i have got an wd80gb normal hard drive on the primary ide slot which is running my os system and at the moment stores all my documents! my new sata drive is connected via the ide converter to the secondary ide slot! not sure bout the bios but when loading the comp it says 200gb hard drive has no 88conection, or something like that!

If your new sata drive is the only drive on the secondary then it will need to be set as the master.

Each ide channel can have two drives (harddrive or ROM drive).

    So you can have....
    Primary Master
    Primary Slave
    Secondary Master
    Secondary Slave

Where is your ROM drive though. I am assuming you have one! Usually they are put on the secondary channel. Generally people tend not to run a rom drive and harddrive on the same channel.
Each ide device has a speed (ata66, ata100 etc) and the channel can only run at the speed of the slowest device. ROM drives are almost always ata33 (or is it 66? :) ) I personally have never seen this proved when Ive had to put a slow drive and a faster drive on the same channel.

To be honest you are kind of forced to put any rom drive you have as the Primary Slave. Ive never had any proof of harddrives running slower.

Assuming you want to leave windows on your old drive id set it up as

    Primary Master...80gb drive
    Primary Slave... ROM drive
    Secondary Master.. 200gb drive

i think for some strange reason it is set upo at the mo as
    primary master - dvd drive
primary slave - 80gb hard drive
secondary master - 200gb drive (not working tho)
what do the jumpers need to be set to on the sata drive to make it a slave?
also now disconnected the 200gbn drive and computer boots up as normal but when i log inn i go to my documents and there is nothing there, to get my documentds i hasve to got to my comp - c drive - documents asnd settings - then user (ash)
    why is that?

you'll be better to make your confiuration as zeus suggested (easier to understand)
    • primary master = 80Gb HDD
    • primary slave = DVD drive
    • secondary master = 200Gb HDD
then verify everything is working in the BIOS (before booting OS)[ot]if you don't know you, just need to move the jumper on the drive, to make it master or slave[/ot]

    From reading this.....
    Answer
It seems its the same as the ide drives.... there should be markings on the plastic case saying Mas, Sla and CS.
No matter where you put it (Primary or Secondary) it has to be a master.

tbh, If I were you id buy a PCI controller card and run one harddrive on the primary, the rom drive on the secondary and then plug the sata drive into to pci card. The sata-ide adapter you have now will only run at ata133 whereas your sata drive is SATAII. It will be running at less than half its speed with the setup you have now, plus you will have an operating system booting on the same channel as a rom drive.
I honestly cant think of a more higgledy piggledy way to setup a system!

The PCI ones cost next nothing.... £12 for this one.
PCI SATA RAID CONTROLLER CARD 2 CHANNEL
Plus its got raid, if you would ever use that.

Connect both the drives through a single IDE cables, where as on primary(IDE0) connector, connect your 80GB drive and on secondary use SATA converter.......First you make both HDD's able to work properly then fiddle with DVD drive.....

There is no jumper settings on SATA drives for Master-Slave.... You can only set master drive from BIOS.......So, i would suggest u to check in your BIOS as well....in case ur computer is detecting as SATA drive...

Karinislove it wont be seen as a SATA drive is BIOS, for all intent and purpose this is an IDE drive.
The pics seem like they have jumpers....
WD Caviar SE 200 GB SATA Hard Drives ( WD2000JS )
but I think they are only to limit the drive to SATA1.

Ill have a search around, maybe this drive will only work if its recognised as a sata.

Firefox is trying to tell me recognised has a z in it!! They need a proper English dictionary.
