Windows 98 upgrade to Windows 2000 or XP

Yeah what I meant with PCI was that my Granddad tried a PCI sound card from his old 98 machine in his latest PC, and it physically didn't fit. It might have been EISA, but I doubt it...

Windows 98 upgrade to Windows 2000 or XP

Yeah the PSU might be ok for repairing older PC's, but probably nothing modern. Same with the sound card, I might be wrong in thinking that the PCI slot design has changed between then and now (not AGP to PCI-E).

    New to this, small problem

My initial thoughts are CPU Cooler not seated correctly Thermal paste wasn't re-applied PSU faulty But I can't say for sure :) Check the CPU Cooler is seated properly. If it wasn't, and the CPU was overheating, it will most likely shut down the system (although mine didn't - it...

Windows 98 upgrade to Windows 2000 or XP

I think your best bet is to buy a copy of Windows 2000 from eBay. When you insert the disc, it should give you the option to upgrade from 98. Make sure all of her files are backed up, as the upgrade doesn't always work, and a clean install may be required. It would probably be possible to run...

    Being Lazy in Linux

Fair enough :) I suppose that's for the same reason I use the classic theme in Windows XP, and the classic start menu (which has been removed from Windows 7 ). Thanks for going to all this trouble, it's appreciated!! :)

Why do you hate 4.2? :D I didn't like the BETA versions of it when I tried it last year, but I've got used to it now. :)

    Purchase advice on a laptop

This reply might be helpful, or might not be :D My brother wanted a laptop for gaming a couple of months ago, and like you we had all the O/S disks and licences etc, so didn't want to pay for Vista. The best place that I found was PC Specialist, because they supply laptops with no operating...

    Being Lazy in Linux

 Thanks for the super quick reply!! If you're downloading Kubuntu, compiz isn't installed by default. I just typed into the terminal sudo apt-get install compiz and let it install whatever dependencies it wanted. It did say it couldn't find xgl, whatever that does, but the whole...

    Being Lazy in Linux

Hi, I'm trying out a Beta version of Kubuntu (9.04), and I have compiz effects installed. It all looks very nice! :) However, being used to Windows, I'm used to being able to move the cursor the to very top right of the screen and clicking, and the window closing. However, this doesn't work...

    New Build rant/suggestion

suggestion I like the idea :) However, this seems to be quite a big jump in categories. eg Where would you put an nVidia 8400GS. It's not onboard graphics, but it's not really a good all round card either, maybe a category inbetween. I know it's a bit early to be deciding categories, but I...

    Question about UK market

I think buses are automatics too. I'm learning to drive a manual at the moment, it's nowhere near as hard as I thought it was going to be, and you can rev the car engine a lot :D (Although it's a Ford Ka 1.3 Petrol I'm learning in, so no matter what you do, you still look like an arse in it :D)...

    excel help

If you only have the Excel viewer, then that would be why. The free solution is an alternative to Microsoft Office, called Open Office. It should be able to open, edit and save Microsoft Office files, so I'd give that a go :) Thomas

Trying to find a compatable video card

I have the 8600GT in my PC (well 2, but it makes no difference whether I have 1 or 2 for some reason :S). It plays Burnout Paradise on full, Crysis on medium, NFS Undercover on almost full, and various other games reasonably well. :)

    modify bios display graphic

I had a motherboard that supported updating the BIOS image with any bitmap file set to the right size and number of colours. Unfortunatley, when I tried, Windows got a BSOD (something went wrong), and the motherboard was dead! :( Wasn't worth getting it reparied, it was on a cheapish one.

    Windows 7 Preview.

:confused: Maybe I've just misunderstood what you've posted? You put a quote from me, then "I can't believe I'm doing this", followed by "If you seperate ME across about 7 partitions", and that was about it ?? (:P)

    Windows 7 Preview.

My laptop (AMD Turion 2GHz and 2GB RAM) runs Windows 7 just like XP runs on it, nice and fast :) Vista however, doesn't run nicely on either my desktop or laptop! I don't think it's to do with age... Windows ME (mistake edition) is about 9 years old now, and that still doesn't run well on...

This is cool: a unified standard for mobile phone chargers?

In our family everyone has Nokia's, so until recently we had a standard charger, and then Nokia decided to change the plug  <-- That's supposed to be "mad"?? How do you pronounce Nokia? We say it knock-ee-arr. I've heard some Americans on tinternet pronounce it Noh-kee-ar :S
