Is the 9800pro not working at all? As Willhub said, if it's just the fan, why don't you plug the 98pro back in and boot the computer? If it boots fine, then you know the 98XT is defective. If the 98pro works without a fan you should be able to at least boot to Windows before it gets too hot...
