    hp laptop

Agreed. It sounds like it had been returned to the store or something, but the employees never restored the unit. Is this the first time powering it on? If so, this should not be happening. If the place of purchase is not too far away and inconvenient for you, you really should go get an...

Power up = short burst of both fans, then nothing

My thoughts exactly. When I encounter people who get those short bursts, it usually doesn't go away so easily. Regardless, it immediately makes me lean towards the PSU, mobo, or RAM. Are you sure that your PSU is sufficient for the parts in your computer? If this happens again, you can unplug...

Windows xp reluctant to boot up. - Help

I would personally rather test the hardware first using memtest or dft to see if it is alright before doing a full restore. Also, when your computer is having trouble booting, will it boot to safe mode?

    Google Toolbar

Well, I'm not sure where Addis was going with this but my suggestion is to go to Start -> run and type msconfig In the window that comes up, go to the startup tab. In this tab. Obviously, this utility is for disabling startup items, which should include your google toolbar problem. Look for...

    Improvements in wine

I also gave up Cedega. I still have an install on my server in the event that I absolutely need it for a game, but I haven't felt the need to use it for anything in probably the last six months.

Why you should be exicited about Firefox 3

I feel exactly the same way. I think Opera is a fantastic browser and I can't point out anything wrong with it, except it just doesn't feel comfortable to me.

Unable to "ENABLE" CD/DVD IN Bios

Your optical drive may actually be going bad. But I'd hate to make a guarantee. Most BIOS's have a "Load defaults" option. If yours does, load the defaults and save. Unless someone went in and disabled the optical drive, it would not do that by itself. Is the drive even recognized by Windows?

    What's the best antivirus software?

I think it'd be a good idea to stick with kaspersky. They have one of the best virus detection rates and seems to be a decent product overall. What errors are you having with it? If its missing files or something, you could always just reinstall the application.

I do have a sid repo in my sources.list, but it is commented out and has been for several months. Virtualbox is not the cause... I haven't even installed it on this system. I am about to go somewhere, but when I get back I will check my apt logs and see what I come up with. I will post the...

Actually, after that message appears, the upgrade automatically stops. I didn't have the opportunity even if i had wanted to. Well is there anything I can do to let you know what I'm missing? Well, I took a look around newegg for a compatible motherboard and didn't have much luck. I only found 1 motherboard that takes the same cpu, but it doesn't take the same RAM. I dont really like telling people this, but honestly your computer is not really worth uprading, not to mention the...
