    Install Linux through XP?

Ok, so Windows does not recognize Linux partitions (most commonly ext3). Windows disk manager will tell you it is an unknown partition. I do not know of any programs that will let you read an ext3 filesystem from Windows, but it may exist (a Google search my help you a lot here). Funny thing...

    New Linux Install

I think this is more of a direct ubuntu/mint-songbird incompatibility. I have no problem with other applications, but as I said, it is fine with me, as I just leave songbird open on the main desktop.

    MS Paint for Linux

Oh, oh, oh! I've heard that one before. You just have to find the integral of the inverse log of the ratio of rabbits at the dinner to the total number of turkeys in the world. Than you square it.

java won't work & it's pssing me off

I couldn't get Java on *ubuntu but Mint came with it pre-installed. I think the plugin is located in the ubuntu-restricted-extras package, however. EDIT: Thats wrong. Which Java package did you install?

    New Linux Install

Yea, I'm using Songbird right now and I really love it. The only thing is that it seems to have some sort of compatibility issue with multiple desktops/compiz (Once I have it open in a desktop I can't move it). This may be isolated to Mint, but it isn't aproblem for me, as I open it and Pidgin...

    New Linux Install

Well, all I had to do for the printer was tell it the IP (print a test page) and tell it the make/model of printer. Oh yea and it was all wizard driven.

    New Linux Install

Haha, well, I would just like to add that my HP workgroup printer was about 10x easier and 10x faster to install on here than it was on Windows.

    New Linux Install

Ok, so right now I'm posting from Mint. I really like it, even if it is just repackaged ubuntu. It installed with support for NTFS and SAMBA. I also like the automatic installation of Compiz when you enable the "Extra Graphics" or whatever. I still can't get dual monitors to work, but my theory...

    New Linux Install

Ok, and am I correct in saying that Fedora is a repackaged Red Hat distro more for the home? If so, would you recommend it over CentOS for home use (things like multimedia are obviously important to me, hence the Amarok complaints).

    New Linux Install

I talked to my boss today about Linux. He's a big user. He recommended CentOS. Any thoughts? How user friendly is it?

    New Linux Install

Ok, so if its a broken distro *ubuntu is out of the question. Mandriva gave me major problems when I tried to install it (as in the installer did not properly recognize my hard drives, showed an area as free space, and wrote over my Windows installation). Debian, Mint, and Fedora all sound like...

    New Linux Install

Well, all said this point ends up being moot because as I said I am using Kaffeine and it works. I was just stating that I found the playlist issue to be a limitation of Amarok (and a big one, it did cause the application to crash multiple times). Anyways, this has somewhat hardened my...

    New Linux Install

Ok, so I got flamed, but I guess I had that coming (although I do appreciate your response, donkey, as it did have some ideas and solutions for some of the problems I mentioned). Ok, what distro would you suggest over it. There are thousands out there, and it is hard to blame me for choosing a...

    New Linux Install

<rant>Ok, so yesterday I installed Kubuntu an my desktop along with XP. I am beginning to wonder why I bothered. I can see some of the reasons why people love Linux so much but I have had far more problems than solutions. Here are my reasons for being so dissatisfied: 1. I can't get dual...

    Web Server

Ok, well, I never posted an update on this, so I guess I should. The issue was all too simple. Windows Firewall... I was outsmarted by Windows Firewall... Tell me something that makes you want to shoot yourself more than being beat by Windows... Ok, so, well, riding on the high of getting...

    Web Server

I will apologize in advance for some poorly developed thoughts and little to no order. Try to bear with me. Also, I realize the networking forum is not the ideal place for this but I didn't see anywhere better. Well, it has been forever since I have gotten on here but in the time that has...

    System Hangs

I am putting this post in the storage forum because I have a sneaking (well, more than sneaking) suspicion that it is hard drive related. I just built a new computer, with all new components, except for the hard drives. I have 4 80 Gb HDDs, 2 WD and 2 Hitachi. The 2 WD HDDs are only about 2 or 2...

    Pentium4 And Core 2

The T7200 should be plenty fast. Unless you really need the processing power (if you are gaming and watching movies you don't) go for the T7200. Not to mention that your graphics will probably be outperformed by the CPU if you go up to the T7600, in which case your games will only run as fast as...

To get a Macbook or not to get a Macbook, that is the question...

Yea, I have used a Macbook and I have to say, it is great. I love everything about Apple. I don't know what the specs were on it, but it had iMovie HD (HD video editing software is not cheap) and GarageBand (neither is a decent track editor). That plus MS Office and it had everything I could...

    Hafnium Anyone?

Ahh, I see now. I read that thread before making this one but I didn't see a mention of hafnium. Looking at the Anandtech article I see they talk about it. It will be interesting to see what happens in the future. Will we continue to find more minor improvements on the transistor design or will...
