can someone help me please?..ok for the ps3 they say the cpu has overall 218gflops and the gpu has overall 1.8tflops…is that even possible on a gpu at 550mhz?and if the gpu can calculate that fast why isnt that their cpu? thanks in advance

A simple bump would’ve done just fine…anyway, back on topic.

Here’s the thing: graphics require a lot more grunt than the average CPU can handle, and that’s the reason a separate chip is needed. In the past, the CPU would handle everything, but as computers became more prevalent and more complex, it became necessary to off-load specialized tasks to another chip. As mentioned, graphics require a lot of grunt.

The GPU isn’t the same architecture as a CPU. The GPU is for handling graphics and it is designed as such. Part of that requirement is the need to do a lot more calculations than the CPU.
