Acceptable Temps

I am playing around with Riva Tuner and thought it would be a good idea to come here before I overclocked anymore. I have a X800 Pro and I want to know what acceptable temps for the card are. Right now I have overclocked the card slowly from the native 475 MHz core and 450 MHz RAM to 550 MHz core and 450 MHz RAM. I haven’t loaded it but my idle tempafter about 5 minutes is 41 celsius and very very slowly rising.

thats quite an overclock for the GPU. If you want to sustain it safely get a graphics card heatsink, bigger than te one with the card.

arctic cooling makes mighty fine heatsinks for cards

I remember looking and they had none for a 6800GT, any pointers?

cooler for 6800GT isn’t made yet

damn it, and 7800 is out already, at least some arctic silver 5 is possible

Yea, my main question is still unanswered.

thats a pretty good temp, video cards of today heat up alot more than other components, my GPU is 48 on ambient, yeah I know, pretty bad, like 65 on load, i know what I’m gonna put on it’s chipset, some nice old AS5

my friend’s 9800pro easily hits above 60 IDLE and I wouldn’t doubt 70 load. Good case, good airflow but ATI’s really cheap and put a piece of crap cooler on it.

some arctic silver five would lower it at least 5 degrees right?

Must not be much of a piece of crap, at least not on the X800. Well, are there any other drowbacks to overclocking besides temperature? Otherwise I will set it to OC at startup.

shortens your cards lifespan alot, like down to 80 years or so haha

Hahaha yea, I’m not too worried about lifespan. I will have it out by the end of the year.

yeah true, nah im gonna sli mine cuz 2 6800GTs make 1 1/2 of a 7800

Sounds good. I might Crossfire mine but I doubt it.

wouldn’t require much just a mobo upgrade for us Amd users (939) everything else would be compatible, and of course though, crossfire vid cards

Yea, but we’ll see how the technology is when it comes out and how many of the kinks have been worked out by December.
