Atapi Dvd Drive

I recently purchased an atapi dvd drive for my pc and connected it to the powersupply and than to the ide bus. It seemed to be working fine windows recognized and I saw it in my list of devices in the control panel…, but for some reason it doesn’t read or write any cds or dvds.
The dvd drive that came with the pc uses a SATA connector and so does the harddrive. So I guess I’m wondering how to get it to work or is it completely inappropriate for a system mainly based on SATA connectors. ?

no, it should work, IDE devices need to be told if they are master, slave or using CS (cable select) & use upto 2 devices per port unlike SATA devices which only support 1 device per port, unless you use a port multiplier

how is the jumper set on the drive ?

host on the motherboard and master on dvd with nothing on slave.

well if you are sure the connections (molex = power & 40 or 80 connector = IDE) are good it could be a knacked IDE cable, but i’ve found molex connectors can become loose with some PSUs, but before you try another IDE cable i’d try a molex connector from a different rail then try setting device to CS (master / slave jumper) in CS if you put the device at the end of the cable it will be master & if you place the device on the middle IDE connector it will be slave, try it as a normal slave then as a CS master & slave, see if the device is recognized by the BIOS then try a known working IDE cable & test your IDE cable

Well actually I’m already on a second one I tried one from an old pc which found the device in the bios but the device wouldn’t read so I got a new one same problem though.
Both times the device was set to master
